๐Ÿ”ฌ September Alumni Spotlight: Rachael Margossian '20๐Ÿ”ฌ

After discovering forensic science during her time at Western New England University, Rachael went on to earn her bachelorโ€™s degree in Forensic Biology, with minors in Chemistry, Health Sciences, and Criminal Justice. A member of WNEโ€™s Womenโ€™s Soccer team, Rachael also worked as an athletics photographer and weight room attendant, building lifelong friendships and making the most of her time on campus.

Following her graduation from WNE, Rachael earned her Master of Science in Biomedical Forensic Sciences from Boston University in 2022, completing her thesis on the visualization of seminal stains. In 2023, she began her career at the Massachusetts State Police Crime Laboratory, where she now works as a forensic scientist in the criminalistics and crime scene response units. In just over three years, she has responded to more than 100 crime scenes, testified in Superior Court for the first time, and worked on hundreds of cases in the laboratory.

For Rachael, the opportunity to learn from real-life forensic science professionals at WNE helped shape the path she is on today. She credits WNEโ€™s knowledgeable professors, small class sizes, state-of-the-art laboratories, and hands-on learning opportunities with giving her a strong foundation for her career. Reflecting on her work, Rachael says, โ€œWhile it is a heavy and emotional career, I know that I am helping others through my love of science.โ€

Thank you, Rachael, for putting your passion for science to work in service of others and for carrying the lessons and connections you made at WNE with you throughout your career. We are proud to celebrate all youโ€™ve accomplished! ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’›

๐ŸŒปAugust Alumni Spotlight: Richard J. Novelli, Jr. '93๐ŸŒป

After graduating from Western New England University in 1993 with a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Rich Novelli went on to serve in the U.S. Army and spend more than two decades with the FBI, specializing in violent crime, cybercrime, and digital forensics. His career has taken him around the world and included major investigations such as evidence recovery at the Pentagon and the Boston Marathon bombing. Today, Rich continues his work in digital forensics and recently placed third in the 2026 Magnet Forensics Challenge, a worldwide competition.

Rich says WNE gave him a perspective that has stayed with him throughout his career: "Understanding yourself and looking objectively at someone else." He credits the meaningful conversations and real-world lessons he experienced in the Criminal Justice program with helping him become not only a better law enforcement official, but a better person.

Thank you, Rich, for your decades of service and for carrying the lessons you learned at WNE with you throughout your remarkable career. We are proud to celebrate your achievements! ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’›
