Missouri State University Clayworks Clayworks of Missouri State University In addition, Clayworks student members have organized bi-annual Pottery Sales held on the Missouri State campus.

The Clayworks student organization was formed in the mid-nineties as a means to unify those students interested in ceramic art and facilitate their involvement within the community. Clayworks has hosted many visiting artist exhibitions, workshops, and lectures open to the student body and general public, bringing in notable artists including Bede Clarke, Tom Bartel, Von Venhuizen, Rudy Autio and C

hang, Ching-Yuan, Clayton Bailey, Zack Tate, and Dick Lehmen. This provides an opportunity for the campus community to view and purchase student ceramic works. Funds from these sales are used to sponsor students as they travel to the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts conferences held yearly. Clayworks is active within the MSU and Springfield communities participating in service activities including clay and kiln firing demonstrations at Artsfest, MSU May Day, Springfield Sister City events and the Japanese Fall Festival. Clayworks has also worked with area high schools and the Boys and Girls Club of Springfield to promote ceramic arts to a younger generation.

Zhongxiang, Yu (Brian) is our visiting scholar this semester from Tainan National University of the Arts in Taiwan, where he is working in the Missouri State University ceramics area. On Tuesday, April 16, he presented a workshop on tea pot construction and a slide talk about his work in Prof. Ekstam's Art 312 Ceramics II class. It was great to hear new ideas and learn of new techniques regarding this revered pottery form.

On a related note, Brian will present an exhibition of work he has created during his time at MSU at Springfield Pottery, 416 South Campbell, Springfield, MO, from April 28- May 6. We will post additional information as it becomes available.

Artaxis and the Ceramic Exchange for Women in Ghana are thrilled to announce a partnership to help support the next generation of clay artists in Kumasi, Ghana.

Today we launch a fundraiser to purchase ceramic supplies for students at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). Students in the KNUST ceramics department often do not have access to the glazes and kilns necessary to fire their work. Without this access, they often critique their work in a bone-dry state.

We are working with nine KNUST alumni who have donated their artwork for the cause. They are: Felix Akortse, Michael Dela Dika, Eugene Ofori Agyei, Emmanuel Asamoah, Vincent “Sniper” Frimpong, Japheth Asiedu Kwarteng, Eric Andre, Joy M. Okokon, and Owusu Ross Junior. 100% of the proceeds will be used to purchase supplies for the students at the school in Kumasi, Ghana.

In addition to purchasing donated work, you can also consider making a donation on the page in any amount in $5 increments.

Reflecting on her own journey, alum and ceramicist Joy Okonon shares, "My journey as a ceramicist was nurtured and began to take shape during my time at KNUST. Fond memories echo the completion of assignments, only to witness them in their bone-dry stage, leading to multiple projects meeting the recycling fate and waiting time to use the equipment, such as the potter’s wheel - one in use for over 100 students. The pinnacle of my experience was the opportunity to use colored glazes on my thesis project – a significant victory."

Learn more, view the collection of work, and join us in supporting the fantastic artists at KNUST: https://shopartaxis.org/collections/knust-fundraiser.

Thank you for your support!

Hsien-Tse Chen is a Visiting Scholar from Tainan National University of the Arts in Taiwan. He is one of two Visiting Scholars working in the Art + Design Department at MSU this spring semester. On Tuesday, March 28, Chien-Tse presented a ceramics workshop to Professor Keith Ekstam’s Art 312 Ceramics II class where he shared his methods for making hand-built functional vessel forms. The workshop was well received by the Art 312 students as they were introduced to various technical and philosophical ideas regarding the artist’s work. Hsien-Tse achieves a good deal of thinness in this work which lends to its delicate, organic nature.
