Springfield College Archives and Special Collections Springfield College Archives and Special Collections Occasionally, we will be passing along links of general interest to those who use archives for research.

The Springfield College Archives and Special Collections, located in the lower level of Judd Gymnasia, houses a rich collection of materials documenting the history of Springfield College from its first days as the School for Christian Workers and the International YMCA Training School to the present day. In addition to institutional and alumni records, there are special collections of rare books,

publications, and manuscripts focused on the areas of the birth and history of Basketball, physical education, physical training, the YMCA, Olympic movements, and amateur and recreation sports. Springfield College Archives and Special Collections is also the repository for the AAHPERD Collection (American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance) and the Cliff Smith YMCA Postcard Collection. Our page will feature images and texts that offer a window onto the rich history of the college and glimpses into student life in the past. We will also be sharing images and questions related to college history that have us stumped, in the hope that readers will help us solve the mysteries that we encounter from time to time.

Lots of activity in the Archives this week! Library staff members John, Hannah, and Elizabeth pitched in to help College Archivist Jeff Monseau, professor emeritus Kathy Post, and former VP for Academic Affairs Jean Wyld sort through many (many!) boxes of documents, photos, and other items from the Health Sciences Center. As the Springfield College campus prepares for the opening of our brand new Health Sciences building, it's fun to look back at these memories from the "old" building!

Frank Wolcott, Springfield College's renowned gymnastics coach, visited campus this past weekend to meet with College Archivist Jeff Monseau. They enjoyed lunch at Cheney Dining Hall along with Frank's wife, Sandy, and some close friends. Over the years, Coach Wolcott has donated a large collection of his papers to the College Archives, and during this visit he shared six additional scrapbooks that document his storied career of coaching and gymnastics through photographs, letters, and other materials that showcase his unique perspective.
