Good with people? Great with details? Prefer doing something hands-on instead of sitting behind a desk all day?

You may be exactly the kind of person who would thrive in Dental Assisting.

Dental assistants are right there beside the dentist—preparing for procedures, working with instruments and X-rays, helping patients feel at ease, keeping the clinical side of the office moving, and becoming an important part of the dental team.

It’s a career for someone who likes people + precision + variety.

And if you’ve thought about healthcare but nursing never quite felt like you, this may be the path you haven’t considered yet.

Mayland’s Dental Assisting training begins September 22 and meets Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 4:30–8:30 p.m.

Even better: don’t assume you can’t afford the training. Funding may be available for eligible students to help cover the cost.

You don’t have to know today that Dental Assisting is your forever career.

You just have to recognize:

“That actually sounds like me.”

🌿 A Little Extra Care for the Place Our Students Call Mayland

There’s something special about people who don’t just work at a college — they care about the place and the people in it.

Mayland Community College faculty and staff recently gave their own time to help refresh spaces around our Spruce Pine campus, including the courtyard our students, employees and visitors enjoy. From planting and hanging baskets to lending a hand wherever it was needed, it was another example of the way the Mayland family shows up — for our students, our campus and our community. 💛

And this effort truly was a community one.

A special thank you to The Quartz Corporation and HMS Grading of Spruce Pine for donating and placing beautiful local, mineral-rich boulders around campus, bringing a little more of the character of our mountains into the heart of Mayland.

We’re also grateful to the Mayland Community College Foundation for supporting new planters filled with pollinator-friendly plants that add beauty to the courtyard while providing resources for our on-campus apiary.

It may be campus beautification, but it’s really about something bigger: creating a place where our students feel welcomed, supported and proud to be.

Thank you to everyone who helped make Mayland a little more beautiful. 💛

🏈 Football, School Spirit & A Little Friendly Competition

There’s nothing quite like high school football in our mountain communities!

Mayland Community College President Dr. Aron Gabriel recently joined Mountain Heritage High School Principal Daron Williams for the Cougars’ matchup with the Mitchell Mountaineers. With Mr. Williams leading Mountain Heritage — and also a Mitchell High School alumnus — Dr. Gabriel’s choice of shirt made for a little good-natured sideline conversation. We’ll let the photo tell the rest of that story! 😄🏈

Beyond the fun of the game, it’s always great to spend time with the schools and communities Mayland is proud to be part of. We value the educators and leaders across Avery, Mitchell and
Yancey counties who are helping students learn, grow and discover what’s possible next.

Here’s to a great school year — in the classroom, on the field and everywhere in between!

Great with people? Comfortable with technology? You may be exactly who we’re looking for. 💻

Mayland Community College is looking for an Annual Part-Time Help Desk Technician — but don’t let the IT title make you think you need to be a technology expert.

For this role, being friendly, patient, approachable and genuinely good at helping people matters.

We’re looking for someone who enjoys solving problems, can explain things in a way that makes sense and wants to help students feel confident using the technology they need for college.

If you’re the person who says, “Let me help you figure that out,” we’d like to hear from you.

📍 Spruce Pine, NC

⭐ Part-time with subsidized health & retirement benefits

Building connections across Western North Carolina. 💛

We were pleased to welcome McDowell County Schools to Mayland Community College for its 2026 Leadership Retreat!

District and school leaders spent the day on our main campus before traveling to Mayland’s Earth to Sky Mayland Earth to Sky Park in Burnsville for a planetarium experience and an opportunity to explore one of our region’s most unique educational destinations.

The visit also brought together longtime education colleagues Dr. Aron Gabriel, President of Mayland Community College, and Dr. Tracy Grit, Superintendent of McDowell County Schools. Before coming to Mayland, Dr. Gabriel served alongside Dr. Grit as a fellow superintendent—making the day an especially meaningful opportunity to reconnect and continue building relationships between education partners.

At Mayland, we know strong schools, strong colleges and strong communities are connected. Partnerships like these allow us to share ideas, strengthen relationships and ultimately better serve students and communities across our region.

Looking for a memorable setting for your next leadership retreat, professional development day or organizational gathering? Mayland offers several distinctive spaces and experiences for groups throughout the region.
