The biggest college myth?

That spending more automatically gets you more.

Today, many recent bachelor's degree graduates are struggling to find jobs that actually require a bachelor's degree.

Meanwhile, students in career-focused healthcare, technology, manufacturing, and technical programs are entering the workforce with skills employers need right now.

The question isn't:

"How many years can I spend in college?"

The question is:

"How quickly can I start building my future?"

At Mayland, many students are job-ready or transfer-ready in two years or less.

Before you assume a four-year degree is the only path to success...

Explore the facts.

Some healthcare careers begin with a single credential.
Others are built one step at a time.

Taylor started her journey at Mayland Community College while she was still in high school.

First, she earned her Nurse Aide credential.

Then she continued into Medical Assisting.

Today, she is taking the next step in Mayland's Medical Laboratory Technology program.

Each credential helped her gain valuable skills, build confidence, and move closer to the healthcare career she wanted.

"It doesn't matter where you start — Mayland gives you the opportunity to keep building."

For many healthcare professionals, the first credential isn't the finish line—it's the foundation.

Whether you're currently working as a Nurse Aide, Medical Assistant, Phlebotomist, or in another healthcare role, additional training can open new doors and create new opportunities for advancement.

Taylor's story is a reminder that career growth doesn't happen all at once. It happens one step at a time.

Different paths. One smart next step.

🏆 Congratulations to Elizabeth Dellinger, Mayland Community College's Business Administration Program Coordinator, on being named a recipient of the 2026 A.I. Innovator in Education Award!

Mrs. Dellinger was recognized for her innovative project, "Think First, AI Second: A Cross-Disciplinary Business Simulation Model," which was selected by a panel of higher education leaders for its outstanding approach to integrating artificial intelligence into teaching and learning.

Willa Patience is Mayland Community College’s 2026 Academic Excellence Award Recipient. This prestigious recognition celebrates Willa's exceptional academic achievements and her contributions to the college community.

Established in 1998, the North Carolina Academic Excellence Award aims to recognize and foster scholarly excellence among students across all 58 community colleges in North Carolina. Each year, one outstanding student from each college is selected to receive this honor. To be eligible, students must demonstrate academic excellence, maintain a cumulative GPA of no less than 3.25, and be actively enrolled in a curriculum degree program.

Willa Barrett Patience is a high-achieving student with ambitious goals. She will graduate in Spring 2026 with her Associate in Science degree from Mayland Community College and her high school diploma from Avery County High School. Willa plans to pursue a degree in Marine Biology with a minor in Sustainability, at UNC–Chapel Hill. She was also offered the prestigious QuestBridge Scholarship—only the second student in Avery County history.

Deeply passionate about conservation, Willa is committed to the protection of sharks and hopes to build a career in this field. She has already demonstrated leadership in environmental stewardship by establishing a recycling program at her high school.

Willa resides in Avery County with her mother and younger brother and graciously credits her mother for much of her success.

Reflecting on her time at MCC, Willa shared, “Mayland has been wonderful for me, and Biology was my favorite class; I admire my BIO instructor, Dr. Sherman, so much.”

Willa excels academically, models strong leadership, and advocates for causes she believes in. She is truly deserving of the honor of being named MCC’s 2026 Academic Excellence Award recipient.
