Cohort 3 Rotations Send Off💜

We are excited to send off our Cohort 3 CP students into their rotations which start tomorrow, May 30th! They will be in rotations from June to December, where they will complete 1000 supervised hours. They will all go on separate journeys throughout this time, with each person starting at a different internship. Each will have an array of experiences, but will all complete hours in a food service setting, community setting, and clinical setting.

Many memories were made throughout their first year as official CP students, and we cannot wait to see what they accomplish during their rotations.

Thank you to our preceptors for helping to guide our Cohort 3 students to success during this time!

Spring Catering Event 🌼

Each semester our CP students host a catering event. In the Fall, students hosted an event for the 2022 CP graduates. This Spring, the other group of Cohort 3 students hosted an event for preceptors and Fontbonne staff to attend. The event was spring themed! The students focused on easy to eat foods that you might see in a picnic! See the last couple of pictures for the final menu!

The catering project is a semester long project that counts as part of CP students food service practicum. Students learn to collaborate with one another, as they create a menu, standardize recipes, decorate, analyze nutrients in the recipes, and prepare all the food involved!

The catering event is always a fun event to see which direction students take it! What was most unique about this group is that they gave away cupcakes that were put into pots. With this, they had basil seeds and book marks which included directions on how to grow the basil seeds! Thank you to all students involved!

🫐Outstanding Dietetics Student Award in a Coordinated Program in Missouri!🫐

Congratulations to our very our CP Cohort 3 student, Fatima Celik, for winning the Outstanding Dietetics Student Award in a Coordinated Program in Missouri!

Fatima was chosen for this award due to her enrollment in an ACEND-accredited dietetics education program, her academic achievement as documented by letters from program faculty or preceptors, her leadership and professional potential, and her membership in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

The purpose of this award is to recognize emerging leadership and achievement in ACEND accredited dietetics programs and encourage further participation in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Fatima will be published in a list of outstanding students in the Journal of Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and receive a congratulatory letter and certificate directly signed by the Academy president!

It is incredibly exciting to have a student in our program to win this award! Congratulations again to Fatima!

✨Preceptor Spotlight✨

Emily Sisk, MS, RD, LDN, IBCLC (pictured in the middle), works at the Coordinated Youth and Human Services as the CPA/Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Supervisor/Nutrition Coordinator. She has been working in WIC for 7 years, after working inpatient/outpatient adult MNT. She loves what she does, and finds it rewarding to see how good nutrition can affect health starting when a woman is pregnant!

As a CPA, she completes nutrition and physical assessments, provides nutrition education and breastfeeding support, and sets nutrition-related goals with clients. As a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Supervisor, she supervises 3 Peer Counselors and provides support to clients when questions/issues are outside of the Peer Counselor’s scope of practice. As a Nutrition Coordinator, she supervises the CPA Assistant by performing audits/reviews, and follows clients who are assessed by the CPA assistant to be at high nutritional risk.

What makes Emily a great preceptor is that she enjoys teaching. Working in WIC, many interns have not had experience with pediatrics/maternal health yet, so she says that “it’s very rewarding to be able to provide that information.” She also really enjoys seeing all of the projects that the interns complete!

Emily’s favorite part to share with interns is her knowledge on breastfeeding. She has a unique perspective due to breastfeeding education/support typically being done by nurses in the hospital. She loves sharing what dietitians can do within this field. Her goal is for interns to have an environment where they feel safe to ask questions and have fun with the content they are learning.

Happy Preceptor Appreciation Month Emily Sisk, MS, RD, LDN, IBCLC! We appreciate you taking on our CP students and sharing your passions with them!

2023 MOAND Annual Conference | Nurturing the Future of the Profession

Melissa Ramel PhD, MPH, RD, LD, who is a dietetics professor here at Fontbonne, shared a poster presentation about the interprofessional work that students at Fontbonne have been doing the past couple of semesters. The CP program dietetics students and speech pathology students have collaborated on multiple occasions in order to perform case studies, work through scenarios, and learn about each others careers. This has given them the ability to understand how they might work together in the future and know how to communicate with one another.

This year the MOAND annual conference’s theme was about nurturing the future of the profession. MOAND held presentations regarding the topic with some including: “Precision Nutrition - Recent Advances and Controversies in Genetic Testing,” “Interprofessional Education for your Ears,” and “Gender-affirming Nutrition Care for Transgender and Gender Diverse Clients.” In between sessions, poster presentations were set out for people to walk around and view.

Cooking Demo🍕

Cohort 3 students, Alysha and Grace, held a cooking demo and an education for a group of individuals who have cochlear implants. The group created personalized pizzas and put together a salad bar! They learned about MyPlate while their pizzas were in the oven! Fontbonne’s deaf education and speech-language pathology department students assisted in the cooking demo, and had an opportunity to create their own pizzas!

Alysha and Grace have done a few different cooking demos throughout the semester in order to get practicum hours and gain experience before rotations!

Thank you for collaborating with us on this! We have appreciated all the opportunities we have had to learn with you!

✨Preceptor Spotlight✨

Meet Angela Roche, MS, RD, LD, CNSC, the Director of Dining Services at Affton School District! Angela Roche takes on both practicum students and interns from Fontbonne! She is also Fontbonne alumni!

Angela Roche takes on many tasks for her job at Affton School District! She runs the school nutrition program for the entire school district. She creates menus, recruits and hires staff, and ensures the program meets federal guidelines, while serving food that kids love!

What makes Angela Roche an amazing preceptor is that she enjoys helping her students learn the different areas of her dietetics that they may not have experienced before.

Happy Preceptor Appreciation Month to Angela Roche, MS, RD, LD, CBSC. Thank you for working with Fontbonne CP students to further their education!

✨Preceptor Spotlight✨

Marie Gorski MFN, RD, LD, is a Registered Dietitian at the Gateway Region YMCA! Marie says a great part of her job is that there is a lot of variety! She sees clients four days a week and is the only RD in the country able to do billable MNT within the YMCA. This has been exciting because she has started that program from the ground up! She also conducts in person and virtual learning events in the 24 branches of the Gateway Region YMCA which almost always includes an element of eating delicious, healthy foods!

Marie is an amazing preceptor for Fontbonne CP students, and is always excited to see the interests of the next generation of dietetics and how they are going to promote nutrition and wellness in their future careers. She challenges her interests to engage with the people they are serving whether it be patients in a clinical setting or nutrition education events. It is important to her that interns have real life experiences outside of the books. She also does a great deal of social media engagement so her interns also have an opportunity to participate in this aspect of dietetics.

If you can’t find Marie Gorski MFN, RD, LD, helping clients to meet their health and wellness goals, she is probably getting lost in the woods!!

Happy Preceptor Appreciation Month to Marie Gorski! Thank you so much for helping our CP students advance in their education!

April is National Preceptor Month! This year is actually the 10th Anniversary of National Preceptor Month! Thank you to all of our preceptors for helping us learn and experience all types of environments that we may get to work in one day. We are so lucky to have the opportunity to work with so many amazing preceptors!

Stay tuned this month to learn about a few of the preceptors that some of our CP students have gotten to or will get to work with during rotations/practicums!

If you are a preceptor for Fontbonne dietetics students, and would be interested in helping our social media page highlight the importance of preceptors, please message our social media pages!

Special Olympics ‘Sports Zone and Hydration’ event at Lindenwood

This past weekend, Fontbonne CP students went to Lindenwood for the Special Olympics. There were two separate tables that Fontbonne students lead. The first was the Community Health Class, and they had fruit-infused waters and fruit/veggie samples. They have been working on this for a few weeks together, while promoting their theme “eat your water.” Second was Fatima, a Cohort 3, who held a mix your own trail mix station. She is currently working with special olympics for her community practicum! She will continue to work with them for the rest of this semester!
