Association of Mixed Students

Association of Mixed Students We are all about everything mixed! Check this page often for updates, events, and interesting links!

Mixed is a student-inspired and student-run cultural group that raises awareness about people of mixed heritage and celebrates their identity and experiences. Our group strives to provide mixed students at Washington University in St. Louis with a supportive social community founded on personal connections and with a forum where everyone can feel safe sharing their experiences. Mixed is committed

to establishing and developing alliances with other social and cultural groups on campus, as well as seeking to connect to the greater St. Louis community and working with the admissions department to encourage an increase in mixed student interest in the university. Because the world is a mixed place and diversity is a wonderful aspect of everyday life, we encourage involvement in our group for anyone and everyone. "Another factor is our tendency to seek out and associate with people who are similar to us in any number of ways - religiously, politically, economically and, yes, racially, too. The polite term for this phenomenon is "sorting," and it affects everything from political polarization to income inequality to the racial differences in friend networks seen above."

How does the modern mixed American fall into this phenomenon of sorting? What implications do mostly homogenous social circles have on our society?

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2014/08/25/three-quarters-of-whites-dont-have-any-non-white-friends/

Data show that for most white Americans, none of their best friends are black.
