Department of Pharmacology & Physiology, Saint Louis University

Department of Pharmacology & Physiology, Saint Louis University Welcome to The Department of Pharmacology and Physiology's page. Our Department is in the School of Medicine at Saint Louis University.

The Department of Pharmacology & Physiology is made up of highly accomplished faculty and scholars that are widely recognized with awards, appointments to national committees, and invitations to speak at international symposia. We have an excellent success record in obtaining national funding from such sources as the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, and other nationally

recognized funding agencies. Our graduate program maintains a rich history of national recognition in graduate education and research. Many graduates have prominent positions in academia, government and industry. The Department has been awarded Training Grants from the National Institutes of Health. These prestigious and highly competitive grants are awarded to only a few programs nationwide each year and are perhaps the best indication of the high quality of our program.

The 2025 St. Louis Translational Pain Research Forum, held September 26–27, 2025, was a resounding success, featuring 2 plenary speakers, 13 invited talks, 71 poster presentations, and over 200 participants from the Midwest and beyond. Speakers represented institutions including Saint Louis University, Washington University, University of Kansas Medical Center, University of Cincinnati, University of Pittsburgh, Medical College of Wisconsin, Indiana University, and MD Anderson.

Founded in 2023 by Dr. Daniela Salvemini (Department of Pharmacology and Physiology), the Forum is a partnership between the Institute of Translational Neuroscience at Saint Louis University, the Washington University Pain Center and the Center for Clinical Pharmacology in the Department of Anesthesiology at Washington University.

With a strong emphasis on trainee engagement, mentorship, and career development, the event is helping shape the next generation of pain researchers while fostering cross-institutional collaborations across the Midwest and beyond

Aubin Moutal (Pharm/Phys), with first authors Laurent Martin, Harrison Stratton, and colleagues at SLU, University of Arizona, Université Claude Bernard Lyon, and University of Florida, has published "Anti-CV2/CRMP5 autoantibodies as drivers of sensory neuron excitability and pain in rats" in Nature Communications.

Lung and thymoma cancer patients often suffer from autoimmunity and related painful neuropathies. Here the authors show that patient-derived anti-CRMP5 autoantibody binds to rat dorsal root ganglia to cause pain, that immunizing rats with CRMP5 recapitulates these phenotypes, and that depleting rat....
