The Center for Sustainability integrates Maryville's core values of civic engagement, ethical leadership, teaching and global awareness in support of environmental stewardship, social equality, and economic health. The Center initiates encourages, and facilitates, collaborations that bring about sustainable changes at Maryville University and beyond. To accomplish this goal the center collaborates

with students, faculty, and staff from administrative, operational and academic units on the Maryville campus. Students are empowered to lead their peers in community-based projects with other students, university personnel, and local community agencies at Maryville and throughout Missouri. Currently, the Center is working with Maryville community to use natural and energy resources responsibly by creating systems that enable individuals and groups to reduce, reuse, and recycle all resources used in our daily activities and to reduce our carbon footprint so that energy losses and corresponding costs can be reduced. The three spheres of sustainability: environment, economy, and society are explored through initiatives, critical thinking, research, challenges, and marketing projects.

A group that prides itself on cleaning up has been cleaned out. Someone stole canoes and boats belonging to Joachim Watershed Stream Team 4660.

The volunteer group, which picks up trash from rivers, creeks and streams, reports that two aluminum 17-foot-long canoes and two aluminum 12-foot-long johnboats were stolen from Massot Road in the Festus area of Jefferson County sometime between Wednesday and Monday.

The boats all have Missouri Stream Team stickers on them. The volunteers use the boats almost every weekend to clean up area waterways. A GoFundMe account has been set up to raise $5,000 to replace the boats.

The Stream Team supplies are stored at a home in the Festus area. They belong to Kenneth Thomas III of St. Louis and his girlfriend, Christine Endsley. They bought the canoes, and the johnboats were donated.

Thomas presumes someone stole them for scrap metal to feed a drug habit. Chainsaws, tools and other items were also taken from the house where the boats were stored, Thomas said.

"I'm a little numb about it," he said.

"All of our free time is spent cleaning up the waterways around St. Louis somewhere," he said. "We're dead in the water without them. We'll have to reach out to other (stream) teams and ask to borrow equipment."

Anyone with information can call the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office at 636-797-5000. *St. Louis Post-Dispatch 12/13/16
