HIST 1110: ORIGINS OF THE MODERN WORLD TO 1500
This course covers the history of Western civilization from its beginnings to ancient Greece, Rome, Byzantium, and the Middle Ages until the Renaissance. Readings will include selections from Thucydides' Peloponnesian War and Suetonius' Twelve Caesars, Procopius' Secret History, Einhard's Life of Charlemagne, Villehardouin's Conquest of Constantinople, and selections from Guicciardini's History of Italy. There will be lectures, discussions of the readings, two midterm examinations, and one final examination.
Description for HIST 3000: THE GREEK MIRACLE: GREECE FROM THE BEGINNINGS TO CLEOPATRA
This course covers ancient Greek civilization from the arrival of the Greeks in Greece to the Mycenaean Age, the Persian Wars, the Peloponnesian War, Alexander the Great's conquest of the Persian Empire, and the Greek kingdoms from Alexander to the Roman conquest. Readings will include Homer's Odyssey, Sappho's Poems, selections from Herodotus' Histories and Thucydides' Peloponnesian War, Lysistrata and other comedies by Aristophanes, Plato's Symposium, and several lives by Plutarch. There will be lectures, discussions of the readings, midterm and final examinations, and one term paper.
