Interesting Article in the August 2015 Issue of Chief Learning Officer Magazine that supports what we are trying to do with the MS-HRM Program.

"As strange as it may seem, the acronyms, CLO, CEO, CFO, and ROI are more connected now than ever before, and they're trending to be even more closely connected."

So begins the opinion piece, "The C-Suite Connection", by Jack Phillips and Patti Phillips in the most recent Chief Learning Officer Magazine.

The Phillips argue that calculating Return on Investment or ROI is the most crucial tool that an HR professional can use to show accountability. "The 2015 'CLO Measurement and Metrics' study indicates that 22 percent of organizations are using return on investment to show CEOs the value of learning." How many other HR professionals outside the learning and development function are using ROI to show accountability and CEOs the value of HR?

Busy being Busy?

One of my concerns entering graduate school was if the amount of work required from me would become overwhelmingly time-consuming. Everyone knows College can become stressful during long hours of homework and studying especially during midterms and finals; however, how was I to know if graduate school would become unmanageable?! The TRUTH is that the HRM program does pose some challenges; however, with time management, it’s not impossible.

If you ask anyone, I am probably one of the busiest individuals you can meet. Aside from being a Full-time Student in the HRM program, I concurrently work part-time as an HR intern, as well as work at Sacred Heart University as a Graduate Assistant and Assistant Cheerleading Coach. Personally I like to take on many tasks, but the KEY to becoming successful and stress-free IS TIME MANAGEMENT. It is possible to attend school, work, and find time for yourself all while maintaining a high grade-point average!

What I like to do is have a calendar and agenda book to keep track of what is due when and tasks I need to complete. Staying organized helps me to relax and remember what I need to do, when I need to do it, and build downtime to hang out with friends and family. Aside from what I do personally, Sacred Heart has provided me with guidance and support! My graduate advisor, faculty in the program, and classmates have all been there every step throughout the program, whether I need advise and guidance or need a study partner and friend.

Another way how the HRM program is possible with my busy schedule is how the part-time and full-time programs are organized. With classes on Saturdays, I have my week free to work. Also, being apart of the Full-Time HRM program, my internship in a Human Resources department counts as 6 credits (or 2 courses).

[Check out my future posts to hear more about specific classes and my internship!]

It is possible to have a Work-Life balance and prioritizing time between work/school (career and ambitions) and your lifestyle (Family, health, leisure, etc.) with the right resources. I’m happy that I have found a program and a school that provides me with the right tools for success.

MESSAGE ME! I would love to hear any and all YOUR comments and questions.

Check out posts of "A Student's Perspective" blog from SHU graduate student Melissa P. Here is her post about SHU's Stamford Graduate Center.

“Sacred Heart’s innovation, responsiveness to changing marketplace demands and efforts…creatively meets students’ educational needs.” Just last year, SHU offered three new graduate programs, masters programs in digital marketing and human resource management, as well as a doctorate in business administration in finance. All these programs are offered at Sacred Heart University’s Stamford Graduate Center.

As I mentioned in my previous post, all my classes are located at SHU’s Stamford Graduate Center (located at 3 Landmark Square, Stamford, CT 06901). This week I thought ill talk about how awesome it is attending classes in Stamford. As told by John Chalykoff, Dean of the John F. Welch College of Business, “Stamford is a hub for digital marketing in Connecticut. This region has a concentration of small and large firms with HRM educational requirements.” Stamford is a great city to find many job opportunities and network. SHU’s Stamford Graduate Center is within walking distance to many restaurants and coffee shops, and is even attached to the Stamford mall. It’s convenient that whether you want to catch a movie, do some shopping, or grab a cup of coffee from Starbucks, it is located only a few shorts steps away from your classroom. As an added bonus, SHU’s Stamford Graduate Center is a less than a ten minute walk from the train station and Transportation Center, and offers discounted parking for SHU Students in their parking garage ($3.00 for all day parking).

I really do like attending classes at the Stamford Graduate Center. Aside from the perks of being in Stamford, the classrooms are spacious and the lounges outside the classrooms are great for meeting with a group to work on a project or catch up on some homework or studying. If you need a quieter place to study or do homework, the Ferguson Public Library is convienently located right across the street. Also, this past September, we hosted our 1st HR Reception at SHU’s Stamford Graduate Center. It was fun meeting and socializing with other students and faculty in the MS in HRM program outside the classroom.

I would love to hear any and all YOUR comments and questions. Please message me back with any topics you would like to read about!

Happy Holidays! Although the holidays are full with fun and cheer, traveling can be the WORST. Travels can be filled with traffic and tend to be stressful, expensive, and one big headache; however, I’m here to let you know that TRAVELING to Class IS SIMPLE and STRESS-FREE!

In the MS in Human Resource Management program, all classes are held at Sacred Heart University’s new STAMFORD GRADUATE CENTER (located at 3 Landmark Square
Stamford, CT 06901). What I find great about my grad classes is that they are all on Saturday mornings and/or early afternoons, which is perfect in avoiding rush hour traffic that occurs during the week.

For Those Traveling from Westchester, NY or Connecticut:
I am originally from Yonkers, NY, but I currently live in Bridgeport, CT around the corner from SHU’s Main Campus in Fairfield, CT. From both cities, my commute consists of a 30-35 minute drive on the Merritt Parkway and/or the I-95. Whichever route I take, I almost never hit any traffic, unless there is an accident. Once in Stamford, the SHU’s Stamford Graduate Center is attached to the Stamford Mall right off Atlantic Street with a parking garage located on Broad Street [SHU Students can even park in the parking garage all day for ONLY $3.00!].

For Those Traveling from New York City [Here are a few words from my classmate, Adam Lagosz]:
“From where I live on Upper East Side in NYC, it is only a hop, skip, and a jump to SHU Stamford Graduate Center. I take the Lexington Avenue 4/5 express train one stop to Harlem 125th street (less than 10 min.) from my apartment door. From Harlem 125th, I transfer to the NEW HAVEN LINE METRO NORTH. The great thing about having class on a Saturday is that all trains are OFF-PEAK and ONLY $10 and since Stamford is a connecting station for both Amtrak and Metro North you never have to wait more than 15 min for a train. Both express and local trains run every half hour and it takes about 35-45 minutes to arrive at the Stamford Train Station. It takes less than 10 minutes to walk to the Stamford Graduate Center and my classmates always offer and are willing to give me a ride. If for any reason I did not want to walk, there are always cabs waiting at the station as well as Stamford city buses. My commute is LESS than many peoples coming from other parts of CT. The nice thing about taking the train is that it is reliable, you never get stuck in traffic, and it is also a time to relax before and after class as well as get some reading done!”

Students in my class travel from all around NY, CT, and more. REMEMBER—if you have questions, I have answers! I would love to hear any and all YOUR comments and questions, especially if you would like to know what commutes are like for other students from different areas. Please write to me below!

Check out the first post of "A Student's Perspective" blog from SHU graduate student Melissa P.

"What Is Getting A Masters In HR Really Like?

"HR has just got to be as important as any other function in a company. In fact, why wouldn't HR be as important as finance? After all, if you managed a baseball team, would you listen more closely to the team accountant or the director of player personnel? Both the accountant and director of player personnel belong, alongside the CEO, at the table where decisions are made." - Jack Welch from "Winning"

Above is an amazing quote from SHU’s John F. Welch College of Business’s very own Jack Welch on the importance of HR in companies. The traditional HR role has been redefined. Graduates of advanced HR degree programs go on to become trusted advisors, diplomatic leaders, and strategic trailblazers who excel in today’s complex business environment.

My name is Melissa and I am apart of the first full-time cohort for SHU’s Masters of Science in Human Resource Management program looking to become a successful leader in the human resources field. TODAY is the first of MANY DAYS that I will be posting blogs revealing my journey and experiences through SHU’s unique HRM program and a little about myself. From why I chose this program, to transportation, classes, balancing work-life schedules, internships, and how things I learned in this program relate to real-world experiences…I will talk about it all!

If you have questions, I have answers! I would love to hear any and all of YOUR comments and questions, so please write to me below. I promise to always write back. =)"
