Hello All!

Here are the meanings of the symbols on the Four Seasons vessel that we showed earlier!

On the left is a peach, which represents longevity. The Flowers of the Four Seasons (peony, lotus, chrysanthemum, and plum) represent the eternal cycle of the year, which each blooming and fading in its season. The peach is in the center of the vessel we found, which is its usual placement.

On the right is an Eternal Knot, representing the endlessness and connectedness of eternity. The knot is on the base, or underside, of the vessel - also a fairly usual placement.

This beautiful bowl with the Four Seasons Flowers design on it came out of the midden today!

Do any of you know what the symbol on the base and the symbol in the center of the interior are and what they mean?

Drop your answers in the comments section. We'll let you know tomorrow about the significance of the two designs!

Here's a beautiful Bamboo pattern rice bowl fragment from the northern end of the midden.

We love finding sherds that have both the howl's rim and base, because we can learn so much about the original vessel that way!

Dig in!

Here is a beautiful copper alloy spoon that we found in the midden.

What do you think of the pattern?

Pictured: our spoon all cleaned up, close-ups of the design, and the spoon fresh from the field! Quite the before and after!

P.S. We're partially sorry for the bad pun!

This white ball clay to***co pipe came out of our midden.

It was manufactured by William White in Glasgow Scotland between 1891 and 1899.

It is always exciting when we can get such a tight date range!

In this case, we were able to get a firm early date because the pipe stem is marked "Scotland" rather than "Glasgow" on the reverse. This indicates that it was made after the US introduced the McKinley Tariff Act in October of 1890 (largely in effect, though, by 1891).

The end date of the range comes from the fact that William White produced pipes marked "W. White" until 1899. After this point, the company only used the "W. White & Sons" mark that they had used from 1805 (they used it up through 1955, making them one of the last pipe manufacturers to close!).
