Fontana didn’t become a warehouse empire by accident. Jonathan García joins us to unravel how private industry, public policy, and generational survival intertwined to build — and burden — a community. From sacrifice zones to stories of resilience, he brings Fontana to life with urgency and heart.

On October 2nd we celebrated the launch of World Pacific, the second novel by Peter Mann, instructor in our first-year Foundations course.

Jeremy Sabol facilitated an insightful discussion with Peter about World Pacific and the writing process, followed by a book signing and a reception with members of our community. It was one of those special evenings the MLA can offer: engaging with literature, ideas, and like minded friends and colleagues.

And a big congratulations to Peter Mann.

Students in Charlie Junkerman’s course John Muir’s Radiant Vision spent a memorable day at the John Muir Historic Site in Martinez on a hot summer day. They began with lunch beneath the shade of 180-year-old pecan trees planted by Muir’s father-in-law, John Strenzel, and ended with a visit to Muir’s gravesite. Special thanks to Mike Wurtz, Director of the John Muir Papers at UOP, for joining the conversation, and to National Park Ranger Andy Marker for leading the tour.

In this episode of KNOW THIS, I talk with Stanford MLA alum Ann Wilson Green about her thesis on James Joyce’s Ulysses. Ann brings insight and clarity to a famously difficult text, exploring how Joyce reimagines narrative structure, language, and the act of reading itself.

Also wish Ann good luck as she starts a new year joining the Board of her graduate school, Claremont Graduate University (CGU). Post PhD, she will continue to study "Ulysses" as a Visiting Scholar at CGU.

Congratulations to MLA alum Astrid Smith on the release of her book, Transmediation in Archival Objects.

Astrid’s work explores how meaning shifts across media forms—especially within rare and historical materials. In her newly published book, she blends archival theory with artistic practice to ask what happens when we reimagine preservation as a form of storytelling.

We had the chance to talk with Astrid on the MLA podcast about the ideas behind her thesis and how the MLA program shaped her thinking.
