Sister Spotlight | Women’s History Month
As we close out Women’s History Month, we proudly honor our chapter president, Judge Sumeka C. Thomas, whose leadership, service, and impact reflect a standard of excellence that is inspiring.
A native of Okolona, Mississippi, Sumeka is a graduate of the University of Mississippi, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in History, followed by her Juris Doctor from the University of Mississippi School of Law. She is licensed to practice law in both Mississippi and Tennessee and currently maintains a law practice in downtown Okolona.
Sumeka has made history in multiple ways. She became the first woman appointed as judge in the cities of Okolona and Verona, and later the first African American appointed as Youth Court Judge for Chickasaw County. Her work on the bench and in her practice reflects a commitment to justice that is not only professional, but deeply personal.
Through her knowledge of the law, Sumeka uses her voice as an instrument of advocacy, supporting and caring for others in ways that extend far beyond the courtroom. Whether through her legal practice, her judicial service, or her involvement in organizations such as the NAACP, Mission Okolona, and the Okolona Main Street Chamber of Commerce, her work consistently reflects a heart for people and community.
Within Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, Sumeka serves as President of the Upsilon Pi Omega Chapter, where her leadership is both impactful and authentic. She leads with strength, wisdom, and a sense of humor that brings balance to the work. She is also a leader who understands accountability, modeling what it means to show up, grow, and continue forward with integrity.
Within the community, her contributions have been recognized through numerous honors, including the Okolona Area Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year, the Trailblazer Award, and the Glenda Glover Leadership Institute Award.
In celebrating you, Sumeka, we recognize that the historic firsts you have achieved within your community reflect what is possible through dedication, resilience, and a steadfast commitment to purpose, and contribute to creating pathways for others to follow. Such firsts, particularly within the judiciary, are often the result of extraordinary grit and perseverance, much of which may never be fully seen or understood.
We salute you, Sumeka! We see you and we thank you for the many ways you serve both the community and the Upsilon Pi Omega Chapter.
Happy Women's History Month!!
