Penn State has an obligation toward our students and our community to model ethical leadership in a warming world. A conference on April 11, 2014 brought together Penn State community members already committed to responding to the threat of climate change. Our goal is to begin imagining a workable plan to achieve zero effective emissions by 2050, providing a model for universities and large corporations across the country and an inspiration for local and regional governments.

We have thousands of acres of parking lots in Pennsylvania and thousands more on warehouse rooftops in places like Cumberland County. Think about the acreage of parking lots at our schools & universities, stadiums, grocery & department stores, casinos, hospitals, & hotels. If we use the Inflation Reduction Act & other incentives, private investment, public will, & modify some legislation, we can spur PA jobs, create , & # change at the same time. That's a win-win-win!

France just legislated that every parking lot for 80 cars or more must be covered by solar panels. That’s 11GW of new solar (same as 10 new nuclear reactors) powering millions of home - zero new land neede. What can we do?

In case you missed it; PSU is getting some well-deserved press!

The university, which is as big as a city, has slashed its carbon emissions since 2004. That effort is now paying for itself in lower energy costs. Could actual cities do the same?
