Eagle star Adrian Peterson lets our Journey sales team get a selfie!

Our own business coordinator Samantha Reid and student advertising manager Austin Hinkley took copies of The Journey to an on-campus talk by Eagle legend Adrian Peterson last week.

We know he's a legend because he has a "legend" page in The Journey! Right next to his pal Tracy Ham's page, in fact. So Adrian enjoyed checking out the whole spread and the magazine. And now we know he's a super-nice guy, as the photo shows.

Adrian has an inspiring story about overcoming his childhood stutter, which he tells in his book, "Don't Dis My Abilities." You can learn more about the book at https://www.facebook.com/TheAdrianPeterson.

Adrian also is featured by the Stuttering Foundation at their site: http://www.stutteringhelp.org/content/adrian-peterson.

And one of our own student journalists, Casey Rohlen, interviewed him recently about his College Football Hall of Fame induction. Check that out: http://www.thegeorgeanne.com/…/article_d3881154-a090-56e0-b…

And, of course, we'd love for you to get a copy of The Journey to check out Adrian's page and all the other stories about Georgia Southern's legends, championships and traditions. Click the "Shop Now" button or go to https://touchnet.georgiasouthern.edu/…/…/product_detail.jsp…

They didn’t play at the same time, but Adrian Peterson goes with Tracy Ham like blue goes with white on a Georgia Southern uniform. Both from Santa Fe High School in Aluchua, Florida. Both national champions with the Eagles. And now, both in the College Football Hall of Fame.

The Hall of Fame announced Peterson’s selection this month. And for good reason.
• He still is NCAA Division I’s all-time leading rusher with 6,559 regular-season yards.
• He was the first sophomore ever to win the Walter Payton Award as the top player in FCS.
• He rushed for 100 yards or more in 48 consecutive games.

So it’s no wonder you’ll see Peterson’s No. 3 jersey hanging with Ham’s No. 8 at Paulson Stadium.

And one more place you can find them together: in the “Legends” section of The Journey, a one-time special magazine from Georgia Southern Student Media.

The Journey brings you the stories of our legendary coaches and players, historic rivals, traditions and the big games that have made Eagle football the program it is today.

Was Georgia Southern’s incredible comeback coming down to this?

In the 1985 Division 1-AA championship game in Tacoma, the Eagles had scored 22 points in four minutes and 23 seconds in the third quarter to wipe out a Furman lead, then gone ahead 35-28 in the fourth quarter.

But Furman quickly tied the game. And after the Eagles got a Tim Foley field goal, Furman reached the end zone with 1:32 remaining to go up 42-38.

Now here was the Eagle offense, facing 4th-and-11 with 38 seconds remaining.

Tracy Ham drops back, scrambles left, barely avoids a sack and throws a 17-yard completion.

Now 29 seconds and no timeouts remaining. First down, incomplete pass. Second down, incomplete pass.

On third down, Ham finds Frank Johnson for the touchdown, the victory, and the first national championship for Georgia Southern and legendary Coach Erk Russell.

The full story of the wild game in Tacoma is just one piece of The Journey, a one-time special magazine from Georgia Southern Student Media. The Journey brings you the stories of our legendary coaches and players, historic rivals, traditions and the big games that have made Eagle football the program it is today.

We can't help sharing this photo from The George-Anne newsroom today. Between this week's stressful final exams, our sofas are prime nap areas. These students are part of the hard-working staff we always are expanding. Sales of The Journey will help us do that. We want you to buy The Journey because it's a great value, but you're also helping to build student media at Georgia Southern. Thanks!

HELP US NAME THAT CHEERLEADER!

The editors of The Journey magazine, a history of Georgia Southern football, had a lot of fun digging through the photo archives to find shots like this one of Eagle cheerleaders. But in the decades since these were taken, the names of the cheerleaders have been lost. If you were a cheerleader or knew cheerleaders in your time at Georgia Southern, let us know of anyone you recognize.
And we hope you’ll check out The Journey.

TRACY HAM’S ‘MOST ERK MOMENT’
Tracy Ham was frustrated at halftime at the Tacoma Dome on Dec. 21, 1985. The high-powered Eagles offense, with future College Football Hall of Famer Ham at quarterback, had been held to six points in the Division I-AA championship game against Furman.
The Eagles trailed by 15, and the deficit would soon be 22. But an incredible Eagles comeback actually began at halftime.
“When we were walking back onto that field after halftime, he pushed the ball into my hands and told me, “This is your 30 minutes, take it,’” Ham said.
“That to me was the most ‘Erk’ moment I remember. The way he just glared at me, told me we were going to win, when I was in my most vulnerable and frustrated state, that was Erk. That was his approach to football, Georgia Southern, everything. That’s the kind of guy he was indomitable.”
Ham’s story is one of many about Erk in The Journey. This one-time special magazine from Georgia Southern Student Media brings you the stories of our legendary coaches and players, historic rivals, traditions and the big games that have made Eagle football the program it is today. From the furious comeback led by Ham in Tacoma to the first bowl game and the score of every game the Eagles have played, the story is here.

A MIDNIGHT PHONE CALL, A STAGE AND A TICKET TO HISTORY
Just a little after midnight May 25, 1981, Ric Mandes called Roger Inman.
“I need you to build a stage to have a press conference on. It needs to have our logo and a football on it, painted and everything. Don’t ask me why, just do it,” Mandes said.
“Got it,” Inman replied. He asked no questions, but he knew exactly what the stage was for. Inman and Mandes were part of what is now affectionately known as the “Dirty Dozen,” the covert force behind the courting of the first coach for the reborn Georgia Southern football team.
In the months following the announcement that football was returning after a four-decade-long absence, the press had speculated madly who the little college in southeast Georgia could attract. But the Dirty Dozen knew exactly who they wanted, and Athletic Director Bucky Wagner was about to land him.
Inman got a stage in place at Hanner Fieldhouse at 10 a.m.
The rest is history that can be summed in up three letters: “Erk.” Georgia Southern Student Media tells the story of Erk Russell’s arrival and amazing run to six national titles in The Journey, a new one-time special magazine.
