Next week, Rebecca S. will present her study at the Universities of Wisconsin Research in the Rotunda. Learn about her work with Prof. Chunyu, sociology!
She started her work for “Controversy in the Streets” more than a year ago as part of her Urban Sociology course with UWSP Department of Sociology & Social Work associate professor David Chunyu. Next week, Rebecca Smith will present her study at the Universities of Wisconsin Research in the Rotunda.
With support from Chunyu, Smith decided to dig deeper into the evolution of the Highway 51 reconstruction planning, dating back to 2010, and the factors that have generated controversy.
Between historical research, reviewing past road designs and common council meeting videos, Smith has been immersed in the economic impacts, environmental concerns, and personal disputes surrounding the project. The study has been invaluable experience for improving her interview skills, such as coming prepared with questions and verifying facts from sources
“Everyone has validity in their views,” she said.
Smith has been interested in why people do things for as long as she can remember. She transferred as a non-traditional student and enrolled in the sociology program as a junior.
“The major has so many different doors,” Smith said. “It can provide a way of looking at the world differently. You see so many sides of things; it never stops evolving.”
Best of luck to her in the statewide research presentation on March 11 in Madison!
