Some great advice from a fellow non-trad!

I thought it appropriate for my first post to be about the most exciting moment of my semester. So here’s my story. Hopefully it’ll be a little glimpse into who I am and what a great place Stevens Point is to live and be a student!

I know this is a long post BUT it is important! It effects UWSP and you! Please plan on attending the next budget open forum Monday February 9 @ 9am in the Alumni Room. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact any of your SGA senators or me or anyone here at UWSP that you feel comfortable with.
Thanks!

Fellow Pointers,

Over the past week there have been a lot of discussions surrounding a proposed 300 million dollar budget cut to the UW System. On Friday Chancellor Patterson held a budget forum explaining the potential impacts of this cut to UW-Stevens Point.

This email is to inform each UWSP student about the implications of this proposed cut.

UW – Stevens Point projects a 6.4 Million dollar cut to programs and services based on previous state funding allocations. This will occur if the state budget proposal is approved. This number is difficult to imagine, so here is some information that will give some perspective.

Keep in mind this is not a proposed solution. Rather, this is meant to illustrate the impact of such a large cut.

I wish to highlight that the entire College of Fine Arts budget is 6.8 Million and the projected cut is 6.4 Million. At this point, I want to assure every student that this information is only to give perspective to the potential impact of this proposed cut and in no way represents a proposed solution to the potential cuts.

With the historic significance of this proposed cut the Student Government Association is asking students across campus to get involved.

What can students do to get involved?
Email your thoughts and opinions to [email protected]
Walk into the Student Government Office and ask questions. Located in lower Dreyfus University Center room 052, by SIEO
Go to the Open Forums
Wednesday, February 4, 1:30-2:30 p.m., CPS 116
Monday, February 9, 9-10 a.m., Alumni Room, DUC
Write Letters to your Legislator, about what UW – Stevens Point means to you.
Attend the SGA senate meeting and provide your senators with your opinion during the open forum portion. SGA’s senate meeting is every Thursday @ 6:15 in the legacy room, located on the 3rd floor of the DUC.
Share and discuss this information with your friends and fellow students!

One question you might have is: What is your Student Government doing?
Meeting with legislators in Madison, SGA has set up multiple meetings with legislators to discuss the budget proposal, lobby for the UW System and find out more information.
Organizing Student Specific Open Forums
February 11th 6 pm in DUC 374
February 23rd 6 pm in DUC Theater
DUC Tabling, SGA will ensure easy student access to relevant information.

Finally I would encourage each student to follow the SGA on social media. We will be posting updates as they become available.

Have you filled out or checked on when financial aide deadline is? UWSP does not ever stop accepting FAFSA's however, March 15th is the priority deadline. This means that if you apply after that date there may not be as many funds available for you. If you need help filing a FAFSA or have questions, please let me know!
