Online Extension Resources for Farm Recordkeeping

Producers seeking to strengthen their financial management skills can find online resources developed by the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service on the e-Farm Management website. This site hosts a collection of resources including videos, publications, software tools and webinars organized by topic for use by farmers and ranchers. This site has resources covering financial, production, marketing, and risk management topics.

One example is the video on Farm Recordkeeping Tools. In this video, viewers learn of different tools for keeping track of income, expenses, assets, and liabilities as well as production records. The video lists potential needs and how these needs will determine which tool is right for a producer. Lastly, it provides more detail on using Quicken for farm and ranch recordkeeping.

To find this video and additional resources on farm records, go to: http://agecon.okstate.edu/efarmmanagement/records.asp.

More information on this and other farm management topics may be found three ways:

1) on the e-farm management website (http://agecon.okstate.edu/efarmmanagement/index.asp)

2) on the OSU Ag Econ YouTube Channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/OkStateAgEcon) or

3) by contacting Haskell County Extension.

In the Farm Records video, uses of records in planning, communication, business analysis and taxes is discussed. The Farm Recordkeeping Tools segment discusses the need to identify features required, describes financial recordkeeping alternatives, their advantages and disadvantages and points to pub...

We start the show with a look at what insects Tom Royer says producers should be scouting for this time of year.

- In Cow-Calf Corner, Glenn Selk answers the old question, does harvest times of forage sorghum impact nitrate toxicity of the hay?

- Dave Lalman has information about a supplement program to help cattle continue to gain weight while forage quality wanes.

- In the Mesonet weather report, Wes Lee explains how to estimate how much water is evaporating from your pond. Gary McManus says the drought is not necessarily strengthening, but it is moving from one side of the state to the other.

- Kim Anderson says there’s a price/planting relationship when it comes to crops in Oklahoma and its changing.

- Dwayne Elmore explains the difference between a non-venomous water snake and a cottonmouth.

- Josh Lofton has an update on sorghum and soybean crops.

- Finally, Dr. Barry Whitworth says both dairy and beef cattle producers should be looking for hairy heel warts on their livestock.
