October 22, 1948 - On this day in business history, In-N-Out Burger opened its first location in Baldwin Park, California.

Founded by Harry and Esther Snyder, it was California's first drive-thru burger stand. In a space roughly 100 square feet, In-N-Out revolutionized fast food by using a two-way speaker Harry invented. Before then, burger stands had carhops deliver food. At In-N-Out, burgers were made-to-order using fresh ingredients. It operates the same way today- everything made-to-order, no freezers, no microwaves, no heat lamps, no frills. In-N-Out has been listed as one of the top 10 places to work in the United States. Employees are paid well, receive benefits and earn vacation time; the average yearly manager salary is $160k. They have been intentional about their growth and have just over 400 locations in only 8 states. They also have opted not to go public. All of this has helped them build a loyal following and maintain the quality that has made them a West Coast favorite.

On Wednesday, our business students visited Headless Horseman Hayrides and Haunted Attractions in Ulster Park. Mike Jubie shared the story of how he and his wife Nancy started the business 33 years ago, and how it evolved into a world-famous attraction that employs nearly 300 people. We got to take a hayride and learn more about what's involved behind the scenes. (Beautiful weather and peak foliage was an added bonus!)

Thank you to the Jubies and to Operations Manager Bill Smith for making this opportunity available! This was an invaluable and truly inspiring learning experience for all of us.

September 16, 1959

On this day in business history, Haloid Xerox Corporation introduced the 914, the first commercially successful plain paper copier

Using xerography, a process invented by patent attorney Chester Carlson to transfer images using electricity, documents were produced electrostatically using powdered toner. It was called the 914 because it could print on paper up to 9" x 14". It weighed about 650 pounds and made seven copies a minutes.

Before this, copies were made by hand copying, which was laborious, or using carbon paper or mimeograph machines, which were messy. Other businesses used photostat machines, but supplies were expensive.

Before it debuted, Haloid Xerox president Joseph C. Wilson, addressed his division heads, saying, "We are about to give birth, either to our greatest success or to our greatest failure - the 914."

As we now know, it was a tremendous success. Despite the fact that the Xerox 914 had a tendency to overheat and catch fire (and came with a small fire extinguisher), it was transformational for businesses. It was economical, and copies could be made quickly and easily on regular paper. In 1961, the company had nearly doubled their sales revenue to $59 million and officially changed the company name to Xerox Corporation. By 1966, annual revenues exceeded $500 million. Xerox remains a global leader in office production and print technology.

On this day in business history: Mary Kay Ash founded Beauty by Mary Kay

Mary Kay Ash discovered she had a talent for sales as a single mother of three in her 20s. She became a top earner in sales for many years but was frequently frustrated. She repeatedly had her ideas dismissed because she was a woman. She also got passed over for promotions by men she had trained.

Mary Kay envisioned a company that could help women achieve financial independence without having to sacrifice work/life balance. She saw the direct sales model as a way to work from home, allowing them to prioritize their families. In 1963, she started that business with her children, launching Beauty by Mary Kay using a $5k investment.

The business grew quickly. By the end of the first year, the company had made over $198k in sales. Mary Kay understood the importance of creating a culture of support and appreciation. She developed programs to recognize, incentivize, and reward her consultants, including the now-famous Pink Cadillacs awarded to top sellers.

In the late 80s, Mary Kay was one of the first cosmetic companies to cease testing their products on animals. They were also one of the first companies to implement comprehensive corporate recycling. They now use sustainable product packaging, and their global manufacturing facilities are powered by one hundred percent renewable energy and have achieved zero landfill status.

Mary Kay Ash died on November 22, 2001, but she left behind an incredible legacy. Mary Kay Cosmetics has grown to be a globally successful multibillion dollar company.

"You don't have guarantees in this world. You've got to take chances."
- Mickie Siebert

Muriel "Mickie" Siebert was born on this day in 1928. She was a trailblazer for women in finance. She was best known for becoming the first woman to get a seat on the New York Stock Exchange. Before then, women were only admitted on the floor as pages and clerks. She remained the only woman for her first ten years on the stock exchange. "It was 1,365 men and me," she said.

When she moved to New York City in her twenties, all she had was $500 and a used car. Though the odds were against her, she was fearless and persistent. "When a door is hard to open and nothing else works, sometimes you just have to rear back and kick it open," she said.

She became wildly successful. She used her success to help others. She developed a financial literacy program that has been taught by high schools and non-profits across the country. She donated to community groups and charities helping women. She gave money to help women and minorities get their start in business and finance. She invested in women-owned businesses.

Her legacy will continue to inspire and empower women in business.
