CKS Colloqium Series: "North Korea's Changing Society" by Mr. Jonathan Corrado.

How has North Korea's society transformed in the past three decades from the bottop up and the dop down? This talk looks at the forces of marketization and outside information access as accelerants of social change. While households have become increasingly dependent on the marketplace to make a living, the goverment has sought to haress the forces of marketization with mixed results. Prioritizing guns over butter, Chairman Kim Jong Un's government has largely retreated from economic decentralization policies implemented earlier in his tenure. Meanwhile, through smuggled USBs, micro SDs, and pirate radio, the population has gained assess to uncensored information from abroad, challenging the government's information monopoly, with significant implications for loyalty and governance. This talk challenges the received wisdom that North Korea is a monolithic, classless, socialist society with strict gender roles and a gullible population. Instead, it portrays the North Korean people as curious, tenacious, and industrious survivalists navigating a cruel and corrupt system.

CKS Colloquium Series: The Postmemory Generation in South Korea" by Dr. Dong-yeon Koh.

What has happened to the postmemory generation in South Korea, the country notorious for conflicting views toward the Korean and Cold War among different generations throughout a range of political and cultural spectrums? Based on her recent publication, the speaker provides a rare opportunity to look at the oblivious postwar South Korean society and generation gaps to the Korean War and ongoing ideological conflicts in South Korea through arts and films. The talk will introduce the images of notable artworks by thirteen contemporary Korean artists and filmmakers in the genres of documentary photography, participatory arts, performance arts, documentary films media installations, and memorials.

This event is co-sponsored by the Humanities Institute of Stony Brook and the Center for Korean Studies.
