The Physics Graduate Student Association at Stony Brook University (PGSA) serves to promote interactions between graduate students in the Department of Physics and Astronomy and those interested in interacting with its community. We act as a forum wherein students may discuss ideas physical, political, bureaucratic, or otherwise in nature, as they pertain to them, focusing specifically on problems

and potential resolutions. We also aim to provide a voice and enable due democratic process to resolve issues pertaining to graduate students within the Department. Finally, we strive to create and maintain a welcoming environment to facilitate the acclamation of new students to the Department and ensure their continued success. https://stonybrook.collegiatelink.net/organization/PGSA

FAQ Info from the University - linked here because the University Administration is too scared to make any statements in public and refuses to stand in solidarity with international students in their emails and public communications.

Here is the hidden FAQ section dealing with F-1 visa international students. Basically, it appears that the University will guarantee to provide at least one hybrid "in-person" class for all international students to take to satisfy the in-person requirements of minimum 3-credits to avoid ICE/SEVP.

Also, recall that Matt Dawber has indicated that research credits (towards masters or PhD thesis work, and probably also any other guided research credits) count as in-person as well.

Please see this FAQ page for more questions, and please do not hesitate to reach out to the PGSA leadership (through this page or otherwise) with any questions or concerns.

Hey, guys!,
This week we have Daniel Gift's GradTalk on Thursday, April 18 at 2:30 in the grad lounge. Daniel works with Rouven Essig. His talk is titled "Dark Matter: What is it and How Can We Learn More About It?"; his abstract is below (or here: http://grad08.physics.sunysb.edu/gradtalks/).
**We will also have sweets time at 2pm on Thursday before the talk!**

Daniel's Abstract:
While we have much evidence for the existence of dark matter, there are a huge number of unanswered questions about the specific nature of dark matter, such as how it interacts and how massive its constituent particles are. In this talk, I will briefly introduce what was once considered the most attractive dark matter model, the Weakly Interacting Massive Particle; I will then explain why physicists are now turning theoretical and experimental focuses towards a variety of other models. The main focus of the talk will be on SENSEI, a relatively new direct-detection experiment designed to explore the dark matter parameter space in the MeV mass range. I will discuss the methodology, progress so far, and future of the SENSEI experiment. Finally, I will briefly outline a different dark matter model, which hypothesizes a dark matter cooling that mimics that of baryons.
