Founded in 1960, the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences is home to seven academic departments: Applied Mathematics and Statistics, Biomedic

al Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Technology and Society. Hands-on laboratory courses, the undergraduate internship program, and the senior design project provide practical experience in engineering that complements theoretical training. As of 2012, the college is home to about 2,500 undergraduate students, 1,800 graduate students, and a faculty of 148 engineers and applied scientists. It boasts over 18,000 alumni.

For her expertise in artificial intelligence, Yifan Zhou has been honored with a Stony Brook University Trustees Faculty Award!

Zhou, assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, will use her grant to explore how artificial intelligence can help automate and improve this design process. Her research project “Intelligent Quantum Algorithm Design for Large-Scale Electric Grids,” aims to reduce the effort and computational cost involved in building quantum algorithms, helping move quantum computing closer to practical use in large-scale power system analysis.

Over the summer, 42 incoming Stony Brook’s Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) students participated in the inaugural CEAS-EOP Gateway Scholars Program, an intensive four-week initiative designed to prepare students interested in engineering and applied sciences for the academic requirements of CEAS majors. The program was supported through President Andrea Goldsmith’s Fast Impact Fund.

By the end of the program, 62% of participants had earned either direct admission to a CEAS major or placement into an Area of Interest that provides a pathway toward admission.

The Department of Civil Engineering at Stony Brook University is one of the youngest departments, and our growth is guided by progressive thinking as we train the next generation of civil engineers.

Our faculty focus on environmental chemistry, experimental and computational mechanics, systems engineering, and advanced infrastructure systems. Accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), our civil engineering program offers students a broad disciplinary education in the areas of environmental, geotechnical, hydraulic, structural, and transportation engineering. For his recent breakthroughs in data compression and theoretical computer science, Dominik Kempa, assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science, has received the Stony Brook Trustees Faculty Award! The award recognizes promising early-career faculty and provides support to advance their research and scholarship.

“Receiving this award is very meaningful to me,” Kempa said. “I see it not only as recognition of my work, but also of the broader area of theoretical computer science that this work belongs to.”

ESE 551: Electronics and Radiation Effects, coming this Spring 2027, is for engineers and technical people, including physicists, working in aerospace, defense and advanced electronics. Professor Thomas Robertazzi of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering will teach this three-credit graduate online course which meets weekly with a synchronous lecture at 6:30 pm EST on Mondays and is recorded for later viewing.

The class covers the effect of radiation (from space or earth-based sources) on electronics. Radiation can damage electronics either permanently or in a transient fashion. The topic is relevant to designing electronic circuits for spacecraft.

Spacecraft can experience irradiation either from the sun or extra solar sources. Based upon materials from leading research organizations in the area, this course has a special emphasis on testing components for space on earth using simulated space radiation at accelerator facilities.
