Founded in 1960, the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences is home to seven academic departments: Applied Mathematics and Statistics, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Technology and Society. Hands-on laboratory courses, the undergraduate internship program, and the senior design project provide practical experience in engineering that complements theoretical training. As of 2012, the college is home to about 2,500 undergraduate students, 1,800 graduate students, and a faculty of 148 engineers and applied scientists. It boasts over 18,000 alumni.

Meet Ryan Schilling, a research assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

His research combines nanomechanics and integrated photonics. Schilling developed strain-engineered silicon nitride resonators and chip-scale optical systems for precision sensing, quantum-limited measurement, and microwave-to-optical quantum transduction.

He earned his doctorate from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, his MS in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Toronto, and his BS in electrical and computer engineering from the University of British Columbia, Canada.

Before joining Stony Brook, he was a Senior Scientist in Optical Physics at Corning Incorporated, and before that a postdoctoral researcher at IBM's T.J. Watson Research Center.

Congratulations to Jian Li who was promoted to Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics and the Department of Computer Science! 🎉

His research focuses on the intersection of networking, machine learning, and optimization, with an emphasis on developing principled learning and decision-making methods for dynamic and resource-constrained networked systems.

He received the NSF CAREER Award in 2024 and NSF CISE CRII Award in 2021. He earned his doctorate from Texas A&M University and his BE from Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Stony Brook University held an inaugural Homecoming Thought Leadership Series on October 16, moderated by President Andrea Goldsmith.

The panel discussion was entitled, "The AI Revolution at Stony Brook: How Seawolves Are Deploying AI Across All Facets of Our Mission."

Four SBU experts in education, engineering and medicine explored how AI is changing their work, what it means for students and researchers and why human judgment still matters.

Dean Andrew Singer, one of the panelists, said, “If we only teach them how to use the technology that is today, ChatGPT, whatever level it is, well, then we’re setting them up for failure.”

He added, “We as humans have to trust in our own ability to evaluate what is scholarship, evaluate what is original thought and research."

Artificial intelligence is transforming our world, but powering it comes at a cost. ⚡

Researchers in Stony Brook University's Department of Computer Science are tackling that challenge with a $1 million DARPA-funded project focused on making AI more energy-efficient.

Led by Professor Aruna Balasubramanian, the team is developing tools to better understand where machine-learning models consume energy and how to reduce that consumption without compromising accuracy.

The research could help make everything from smartphones to autonomous systems more efficient.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering at Stony Brook University has 20 core faculty and over 50 faculty who are affiliated with our program and recognized internationally in the areas of biomechanics, biomaterials, biotechnology, cell, molecular and tissue engineering, biosensors, biosystems modeling, bioinstrumentation, and medical imaging. The department provides students with a range of bioengineering challenges, from the design of molecular based biosensors to high-resolution functional imaging of the brain, and offers the opportunity to work in world-class labs here at Stony Brook University, Brookhaven National Laboratory, or Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.
