A new approach to quantum network design has earned a team of Stony Brook University and Binghamton University researchers a Distinguished Paper Award at the IEEE International Conference on Distributed Computing Systems in Seoul.

Their protocol verifies local quantum connections before transmitting information hop by hop, offering a more reliable alternative to creating one fragile connection across an entire long-distance route.

The paper was one of only five selected for the distinction from approximately 145 accepted papers and more than 800 submissions.

Congratulations to Dominik Kempa, assistant professor of computer science at Stony Brook University, on receiving the Stony Brook Trustees Faculty Award for his breakthroughs in compressed indexing.

Kempa’s research tackles a complex challenge: How can enormous datasets remain compact while supporting efficient search, access and analysis—and preserving every detail? Does coffee really boost productivity? Does a cold winter disprove climate change?

Humans are wired to look for patterns — but sometimes, we connect dots that do not actually belong together. Stony Brook Computer Science Professor Klaus Mueller and PhD student Shahreen Salim Aunti developed Belief Miner, a tool that helps researchers study how large groups form causal beliefs and where those beliefs diverge from expert knowledge.

Their work could have applications in climate communication, healthcare, education, public policy, and misinformation research.

At Stony Brook, Jachao Lee turned undergraduate research into a path at the intersection of AI and healthcare technology.

Working with Professor Chao Chen, he developed a deep learning pipeline to help analyze brain tissue images for Alzheimer’s disease research — work that was published at the SPIE Medical Imaging conference.

This spring, Lee graduates from the Department of Computer Science’s accelerated BS/MS program and begins his career at Epic Systems.
