Juneteenth commemorates emancipation—and reminds us that freedom is a process, not a moment.

In sociology, we study how history shapes inequality, and how communities continue to shape change.

The Sociology Exchange hit the streets of NYC recently! Students, staff, and faculty took part in a walking tour exploring the former immigrant neighborhoods known as the Lower West Side and Little Syria.

While much of this history is no longer visible today, the stories of the people, cultures, and communities that once thrived here remain deeply important—and continue to shape how we understand cities, migration, and belonging.

We had the opportunity to spend the afternoon with - a community organizer, museum educator, and newly appointed Brooklyn Borough Historian. He is the founder of , a walking tour company and storytelling project dedicated to uplifting the histories of underrepresented communities across New York City.

It is our honor to announce that Dr. Daniel Levy has been awarded the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities for the 2025–2026 academic year.

This award recognizes consistently outstanding scholarly and creative productivity, including an excellent, sustained record of peer-reviewed publications and national and international scholarly engagement. Daniel’s record more than meets this standard, with highly cited contributions to collective memory, human rights, globalization, and political sociology.

Daniel’s nomination was supported by more than a dozen letters from colleagues around the world. As one noted: “Within the international field of memory studies, there is no one better known, more productive, and more engaged; the contemporary field would simply not be the same without his work.”

Congratulations, Professor Levy!!
