By generating and using power on-site with a PureCell system, UConn will prevent the release of more than 831 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually – the equivalent of planting more than 192 acres of trees. The reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions compared to a conventional power plant is equal to the environmental benefit of removing more than 110 cars from the road. In addition to the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, the PureCell system saves nearly 3.9 million gallons of water each year.

UTC Power PureCell system will reduce the University’s carbon footprint and supply clean, efficient energy to the Depot Campus.

The National Bike Challenge: Get Up & Ride! (www.nationalbikechallenge.org) runs from May 1 to August 31. This is an opportunity to challenge yourself to ride more often. Record your rides, and add up the miles you’ve ridden, the calories you’ve burned, and the gas money you’ve saved. You become eligible for prize drawings after you’ve logged just three days on your bike. All bicycle trips - commute, utilitarian, recreational, mountain bike - can be entered in the challenge. Find out how you stack up against riders in other areas of the state and around the country, win bragging rights and win prizes - this might be just the tool to get you more active. Connecticut will compete against other states on a points per capita basis so every trip you log will help us to show the rest of the country that CT is a bicycling place! Join the Challenge and invite all your biking buddies to join also.
You are encouraged to register your company in the challenge: go to www.endomondo.com/registration/organizations and enter the requested information. This will put your company name in the dropdown menu and also enables your company to compete against similarly sized businesses around the country.

Endomondo is a sports community based on free real-time GPS tracking of running, cycling, etc. Bring your mobile on the track and get a complete training log!

Bike to Work – It’s Easier Than You Think!
Bike Walk Connecticut is taking the lead to encourage bike commuting in Connecticut. There are numerous events planned for National Bike to Work Day, May 18 and beyond - details to date and tips for biking to work can be found at http://www.bikewalkct.org/bike-to-work/. Check back often as this information is updated regularly. DEEP Commissioner Dan Esty will be biking to work on May 18, and he asks bicyclists to try the greener, healthier way to get around with this encouragement: “Any day that begins with a bike ride is a good day!”
Would you be interested in hosting an event at UConn? Event setup is fairly simple, and Bike Walk CT can provide you with giveaway items and other assistance. Send a quick reply to this email if you are interested. I am guessing that the semester will be over so that May 18 would not be a good date to enlist student interest, but it might work for campus employees.

It does not take much to become a bike commuter. All you need is a bike, some pre-planning, and a little advice from those who bike to work regularly. To help you get started, Bike Walk CT is sponsoring a state wide Bike to Work Celebration in May. And CTRides is hosting CTRides week May 14 to 18,...
