We hope you all enjoyed this past weeks showing of different sides of agriculture within the industry. Thank you to UConn Poultry Science Club, UConn Pre-Vet Club, UConn Dairy Club, and UConn Block and Bridle for collaborating with us to make it possible!! Just because Agriculture Awareness Week is coming to an end doesn’t mean we stop here in further educating ourselves, the UConn community and general public about the importance of Agriculture!

UConn Block and Bridle is a proud member of the National Block and Bridle association. Their mission statement is to promote interest in the animal industries, to develop a greater appreciation of livestock among students, faculty members and the general public, and to promote any activity which shall be of educational value, especially to the members of this organization. One way they try to fulfill this is that each year the club hosts Little I for the Introduction to Animal Science class where students take six weeks to train different species they are assigned and show off their hard work. Members also go on farm tours as well as attend semi-national and national conferences to educate themselves to be able to properly inform the public.

The UConn Dairy Club was founded in 1948. During the fall semester, they bring cows and heifers to the Big E to do public milking demonstrations and to educate the public about the dairy industry. They also travel to Toronto, Canada to visit the Royal Winter Agricultural Fair to watch the dairy shows and to visit farms to learn about agriculture in other parts of the world. They also host the Dairy Show every spring semester and anyone from any major/background can participate so many people on campus have an opportunity to work with our animals. This is a great opportunity for people who might never get a chance to work with large animals to gain experience and for people who love to show to grow in their passion. The Dairy Club also visits many farms in Connecticut to learn more about our local agriculture. They help with Connecticut 4-H Dairy and Beef Day at UConn as well. As a club, they hope to foster interest and education in the dairy industry both on campus and in our community. Many students in their club also compete in Dairy Challenge, a national collegiate competition in which student teams from colleges throughout the country travel to the featured state of the year and visit dairy farms in order to analyze them based on their nutrition, reproduction, health, genetics, financial statements, business plan, etc. This is a great opportunity for the students to apply the knowledge they have gained throughout the semester from studying as a team to real farms. It also allows students to make valuable connections with industry professionals and other students throughout the country. They also release a milk bottle every fall semester; each year there is a different image featured on the milk bottle. Their 2019 milk bottle featured a drawing of the new robotic milkers that were installed at the KDC on campus.

The UConn Pre-Vet Club works to provide Pre-Vet students at UConn with guidance and information about the veterinary field, as well as opportunities to participate in educational activities in vet med. Veterinarians are incredibly important in agriculture, as they work with farmers to make sure food animals are healthy and happy. Veterinarians have a strong positive impact on agriculture, and work to educate others through research and veterinary practice @ UConn Department of Animal Science

The University of Connecticut's Poultry Science Club is a group of students that come together to share a common interest in all poultry animals and the significance of the poultry industry. The events they participate in, including the Little International Livestock Show in the Fall and hosting the Southern New England 4H Poultry Show in the Spring, gives them the opportunity to share and cultivate a learning environment for themselves and for those who might be new to the industry. A special trip that the club takes is to the International Processing and Production Exposition in Atlanta, Georgia every year. They love this experience because of the immense network of professionals in all specialty fields that they are able to meet, introduce themselves to, and possibly pursue a career with after graduation as well as so many new discoveries and developments that keep our knowledge up to date. @ UConn Department of Animal Science
