Earlier this spring, UConn Communication Access & Interpreting Services (UCIS) was proud to premiere a new accessible version of the University Land Acknowledgement during Commencement ceremonies across the university.

This project was developed over the course of the past year through collaboration with Indigenous community members, consultants, interpreters, and university partners. The goal was simple: to create a resource that reflects both accessibility and respect for the history, cultures, and languages of Connecticut’s Indigenous peoples.

The final video includes interpretation in American Sign Language and Indigenous sign language, along with open captions to support broader access for viewers. We are deeply grateful to the many individuals who contributed their expertise, guidance, and time to this project.

Consultants:
* Marsha Ireland (Tribal Elder)
* Melanie McKay-Cody, PhD (Cherokee, Shawnee, Powhatan, Montauk Deaf)
* Ralynn Skeets (Dinè, ASL Interpreter)
* UConn Native American Cultural Center
* Sage Phillips (Penobscot, Wabanaki)
* Samantha Gove (Mashantucket Pequot)

We are honored to share this resource with the UConn community and look forward to seeing it used across the university in the years ahead.

Happy Interpreter Appreciation Day! Thank You to all the wonderful Interpreters that work so hard to provide communication access across our entire state, and beyond! And special thanks to Connecticut Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (CRID) who we are always grateful to partner with 🤟🏼
