SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: John Rhoden ’26

How do sports intersect with history, identity, and international conflict? Senior John Rhoden spent the semester exploring exactly that for his fascinating senior capstone project. As a student-athlete who played soccer for Warren Wilson College for four years- and as someone who is partly Greek-Cypriot- John chose to investigate the political climate of Cyprus through the lens of the island's football (soccer) scene.

Cyprus has been a divided island in the Mediterranean since 1974, consisting of Greek Cypriot Southern Cyprus and Turkish Cypriot Northern Cyprus. To analyze how this division plays out today, John conducted a case study using:
-The official Instagram profiles of four historic, politically reputable football clubs.
-A purposive sampling of fan accounts.

The goal? To determine whether these clubs foster anti-peace opinions to sustain narratives of division, testing the hypothesis that humans have a psychological need for both allies and enemies. Utilizing International Relations theories like Soft Power, Enemy System Theory, Scapegoat Theory, and Ontological Security Theory, this research offers a compelling look at ethno-nationalism and historical geopolitical tension.

What happens when you combine a passion for social work with a love for the arts? You get the incredible, community-centered work of double major Trace Howard.

Trace has spent his senior year completing his practicum at Open Hearts Art Center, where he’s explored the intersection of creativity and healing. For his applied research project, Trace investigated how multi-modal arts interventions- like a recent talent show where artists created all their own sets, props, and performances- can deeply contribute to personal empowerment.

New Study Away Opportunity!

Ever wondered how the relationships between people and plants shape a culture? In Spring 2027, Warren Wilson College is heading to Senegal!

We are thrilled to announce a brand-new, interdisciplinary Study Away course: Plants, People, and Place in Senegal, co-led by Biology Professor Alisa Hove and Sociology Professor Siti Kusujiarti.

This unique course bridges the natural and social sciences, diving deep into botany, ethnobotany, and culture. Students will explore:
- The native flora of Senegal and its role in local ecosystems.
- Traditional medicinal, agricultural, and nutritional uses of African plants.
- The deep, vibrant connections between people, land, and culture.

Bonus: This counts as an elective for Environmental Studies and Environmental Science majors, OR as a Topics in Conservation Biology course!

Think you know your dairy?

Recently, Warren Wilson became a testing ground for the next generation of agricultural leaders! Student Kai Goldstein, alongside Dr. Liz Benavides, hosted 32 high school students from 8 local schools for the Future Farmers of America (FFA) Milk Quality & Products Career Development Event (CDE).

Contestants had to:
- Identify various cheeses & dairy products and how they were produced.
- Analyze fat percentages in milk samples.
- Detect "off flavors" and defects.

A huge shoutout to Kai, who prepared every sample and managed the logistics to keep the contest running smoothly. We love seeing our students step into leadership roles and support the local FFA community!

Please join us in celebrating Jetta Ghosthorse, recipient of the 2026 Alton F. Pfaff Cup, one of Warren Wilson’s highest honors for a graduating senior.

The Pfaff Cup recognizes a student who embodies integrity, common sense, a willingness to work, and a commitment to growth and progress across every part of the Warren Wilson experience. Jetta represents all of that and more.

As a Sociology/Anthropology and Global Studies major, Jetta has dedicated her academic work to understanding the relationships between people, land, culture, and climate resilience. But what makes Jetta extraordinary is not only what she studies- it’s how she moves through community.

Whether organizing sustainability initiatives, mentoring peers, serving as Co-President of Student Government Association, leading within the Indigenous Students’ Association, or building relationships rooted in reciprocity and care, Jetta consistently creates spaces where others feel seen, supported, and valued.

Faculty and peers alike describe Jetta as someone who leads with both conviction and compassion- someone who listens deeply, uplifts others, and grounds her work in respect for people, place, and future generations.

Jetta's impact can be felt across campus: in classrooms, gardens, affinity groups, community partnerships, climate justice work, and conversations about institutional change. Jetta reminds us that leadership is not about recognition alone- it is about showing up for others again and again with integrity, purpose, and heart.

Senior Spotlight: V Pszczolkowski

Since graduating in 2016 with majors in Biology and Chemistry/Biochemistry, Dr. V Pszczolkowski has built a career rooted in curiosity, compassion, and research excellence.

Now a Post Doctoral Research Fellow at University of Minnesota, V researches metabolic and production impacts of forages in dairy cattle diets..

This year, V received the 2026 Patrick J. Manning Research Award, recognizing their exceptional commitment to the ethical and responsible use of research animals- a reflection of research conducted with integrity, care, and respect.

These photos capture both where the journey started and where it has led: from undergraduate days at Warren Wilson to today’s lab work, and a recent visit back to campus, recreating a moment from a2016 outside the Farm office.
