What if democracy wasn’t something we simply studied—but something we practiced every day?

That question will come to life today, Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2026, at Warren Wilson College (WWC) when students, faculty, staff and members of our community gather for a conversation with author and activist Astra Taylor about her new book and the state of democracy.

This event is part of WWC's Democracy in Action (DIA) campaign at Warren Wilson, led by Dr. Susan Ortiz, Professor of Sociology.

WWC Heroes 🦉😎🦉

For students like Vera Sole Pandolfo, heading back to classes at Warren Wilson College doesn't just mean heading back to a traditional classroom.

Vera stayed at WWC through the summer, working in a role that feels less like a job and more like a way of life. As an outdoor business major, she's carrying on a family tradition of gardening that helps her stay connected to exactly where her food comes from.

She knows her time at Warren Wilson isn't your typical college experience, but that's exactly why she loves it. For Vera, being here feels as natural and comfortable as nesting in the crook of a tree.

Next time you're at Warren Wilson, make sure to stop by the orchard— the place where Vera learns, works, and feels at home.

Vera is surrounded by vibrant green trees and is detailing her experience at WWC and how the culture is to work with the land and not against it while providing for others and herself.

Service Day 2026 💪🦉

Service Day returned this year on August 21. The decades-long tradition takes place during students' first week as Warren Wilson Owls.

The day is spent volunteering in the community, this year at 16 sites, including Root Cause Farm, Old Fort, Oakley Elementary School, Art Space Charter School, and World of Abundance.

296 WWC community members participated, including 263 new first-year and transfer students and 33 student, faculty, and staff leaders. Around 32 non-profit staff members and volunteers from our community partners hosted us.

What's your favorite part about Service Day?

Welcome, new Owls! 🦉

Yesterday, Warren Wilson moved in hundreds of new students with the help of volunteers, HRL, Admissions, OWLs, Student Engagement, Public Safety, and many more campus partners! A huge thank you to everyone who made this move-in so great!

As part of students' orientation, students begin their involvement in the surrounding community on Day 2 with Service Day. An annual event (happening today!) where new students go with their First Year Seminars (FYS) to volunteer.

Do you remember what you or your child's service project was or how your move-in went freshman year? We'd love to hear ALL about it down below!

Summer 2026 Highlight 🔆🌄

Let’s go behind the scenes of The Swannanoa Gathering, a 5-week event where thousands come to Warren Wilson to take workshops primarily about Southern Appalachian music and dance.

In order for the gathering to run smoothly, many work crews have to be on alert. The three main ones are The Swannanoa Gathering Crew, the Conferences Crew, and the Kittredge Arts Crew, which has been combined with the Conferences Crew for the summer.

Tasks range widely from handling stage lighting, washing sheets, running errands, and checking people in and out. The bottom line is that these students keep the wheels turning during these hectic summer weeks.

Many students keep working summer after summer, including Josephine Bate, who’s on summer number 3.

Want to experience the gathering outside of the summer? Go to the link in our bio to learn more about a weekend workshop you can take in September. Perfect for those who want to learn under experienced musicians in a short amount of time!

Have you ever attended or worked the gathering?

There are 8 slides in this post that detail the work summer work crews do to keep The Swannanoa Gathering running smoothly. Multiple photos showcase lighting set-ups, furniture moving, laundry, concerts, and playing. There’s also a mention of an upcoming weekend workshop for The Swannanoa Gathering.

What about Warren Wilson do you think is kinda chic? 😎

As a work college we love that students strive to make a difference and volunteer on and off campus. Do you have a story of when you made a difference at WWC or in AVL? Or if you're a parent of a Wilsoner, when your child made a difference?

We also love inhabiting the beautiful Appalachian mountains, especially in the fall! The Swannanoa River runs through our campus allowing students, staff, and faculty to swim, learn, and educate.

During your time at WWC you learned real life skills and worked with peers and supervisors. Making lifelong mentors and friends. (Or maybe you're here now!) What is one of your favorite connections you made at WWC? Warren Wilson parents, how did you see the work and education impact your child?

Pop your thoughts in the comments!⬇

Summer 2026 Highlights ☀️⛰️🦉

This summer, WWC faculty members Kevin Kehrberg and Jeff Keith performed at the Library of Congress for the “Our Common Ground” symposium. Celebrating America’s 250th birthday and the connection individuals have to the land. 🇺🇸

Alongside them was Jessica C. White a local artist and former faculty member. White gave a presentation and Kehrberg and Keith later joined to perform alongside her while she showcased some of her work. 🎵
