Join us in wishing congratulations to Mia Thompson, recipient of the 2026 Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award.

Sponsored by the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation, this award is presented annually in recognition of a graduating senior’s personal character, integrity, and service to others and their communities.

Throughout her time at Warren Wilson, Mia has embodied these values through her leadership, advocacy, and dedication to building community.

As a Global Studies major in Peace and Justice with a minor in Art, Mia has created spaces for dialogue, cultural celebration, and meaningful connection both on campus and beyond. From founding and leading the South West Asian North African Alliance to organizing educational events, community partnerships, and cultural programming, Mia’s work has been grounded in care, humility, and a deep commitment to justice and belonging.

Please join us in celebrating Mia and this well-deserved honor. Pictured with Mia is one of her close friends Jetta Ghosthorse, who we’ll be recognizing next week for her own impressive achievements- so stay tuned!

From the fields and forests of Warren Wilson to the forefront of scientific research, Susie Lusardi (Conservation Biology, ‘21) is making exciting strides in ecology and evolution.

Susie is currently pursuing her M.S. at the University of Michigan in the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Department, where she works in a Functional Genomics lab studying how agricultural viruses rapidly adapt, using w**d species as a model system. This fall, she’ll continue her journey by beginning a Ph.D. in that same lab and department.

Reflecting on her time at Warren Wilson, Susie shares that it’s impossible to choose just one favorite experience. “I find myself missing my time there so dearly,” she says. From competing on the women’s soccer team, to hands-on learning outdoors in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology courses, to working on the garden crew—each played an equally meaningful role in her college experience.

Susie credits Warren Wilson’s distinctive work program as key to her success in graduate school. “Learning how to balance work, classes, and a fulfilling life as an undergraduate translated so well,” she explains. “It was easy for me to step into roles as a student, researcher, and teacher because I had already been doing all of those things.”

And when it comes to her most cherished memories? “Nothing I do will ever be as special as playing for the Warren Wilson women’s soccer team. Go Hooters!”
We’re proud to celebrate Susie and all she’s accomplishing!
