Swarthmore College Dance Program

Swarthmore College Dance Program Dance is an open program in the Department of Dance and a vibrant part of the arts community. At Swarthmore, dance is a global discourse.

A wide variety of venues for dance performance exist (both formal and informal, on stages and in alternate sites, live as well as through computer animation and videography). Many styles are represented in all Program opportunities including: African, Ballet, Contact Improvisation, Flamenco, Kathak, Modern, Taiko, and Tap. Each year guest artist choreographers augment the offerings directed by reg

ular faculty and students (who may be majors, minors, or simply students with an interest in making dances as part of their curricular work). The central intent of our program is cross-cultural study focusing on Africa/African Diaspora, Asia (both South and East), Europe/North America, and Latin America. The dance and music programs share an integrated approach to composition, history, and theory and believe this is essential to the understanding of dance as an artistic and intellectual inquiry.

Join the Dance Department at Swarthmore College for Throwback Thursday. Featured today is the Dance Lecture & Workshop Series Spring 2026 with Amy Swanson, Improvisation as Q***r Praxis: Dancing Otherwise in Dakar.

How does contemporary dance in Dakar, Senegal relate to the city’s porous ecology and informal economy? How might dance improvisation generate q***r praxis within a strictly anti-q***r climate? Drawing from her recently published book, Dancing Opacity: Contemporary Dance, Transnationalism, and Q***r Possibility in Senegal (University of Michigan Press, 2025), Amy Swanson shares her ethnographic research on the q***r aesthetics of contemporary dance training in Dakar and how those aesthetics intersect with Dakar’s geographical, social, and politico-economic contexts. Swanson posits the contemporary dance studio as a privileged arena where social possibilities other than those considered acceptable in the public sphere take root, a condition of possibility paradoxically enabled by the permeable nature of “postcolonial” Dakar. This talk focuses specifically on Congolese choreographer Andréya Ouamba, whose approach to contemporary dance transformed the dance community in Dakar during his twenty-year residence there.
