Southwestern Community College PTA Program

Southwestern Community College PTA Program The Physical Therapist Assistant curriculum prepares graduates to work in direct patient care settings under the supervision of physical therapists.

Assistants work to improve or restore function by alleviation or prevention of physical impairment and perform other essential activities in a physical therapy department. Course work includes normal human anatomy and physiology, the consequences of disease or injury, and physical therapy treatment of a variety of patient conditions affecting humans throughout the life span. Graduates may be eligi

ble to take the licensure examination administered by the NC Board of Physical Therapy Examiners. Employment is available in general hospitals, rehabilitation centers, extended care facilities, specialty hospitals, home health agencies, private clinics, and public school systems.

After Frida Kahlo died in 1954, her husband Diego Rivera shut her belongings in a bathroom at their Mexico City home – then demanded it be locked until 15 years after his death. In fact, the room wasn’t opened until 2004.

Colorectal cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the United States and the second leading cause of death from cancer. Colorectal cancer affects all racial and ethnic groups and is most often found in people ages 50 and older.

There are often no signs or symptoms of colorectal cancer – that’s why it’s so important to get screened.

To increase awareness about the importance of colorectal cancer screening, SCC's PTA program is proudly participating in Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Locally in 2011, 499 people out of 100,000 were affected by colorectal cancer in Jackson county.

While physical therapy cannot cure cancer it can help promote or sustain a greater level of function and independence for patients who are suffering. Through strength, balance, and endurance training, as well as patient education on personal, home, and community safety awareness PTA's play an integral part in the health care team. Call SCC's PTA department for more information on the program.

This infographic illustrates how catching and treating colon cancer early increases survival. Share this infographic with friends and family to show the importance of screening and prevention.

This year, the theme is Disaster Risk Reduction and Emergency Responses, Creating Enabling Working Environments, and Disability-Inclusive Sustainable Development Goals.
