We want to extend a sincere thank you to Marcquis T. Parham for joining us and delivering such a powerful message on turning setbacks into strengths.

Marcquis shared his personal journey, highlighting resilience, growth, and the importance of staying grounded in one's values even when facing adversity. His story served as a meaningful reminder that setbacks do not define us, but rather shape us into who we are meant to become.

As we wrapped up our final Like Me Program meeting of the semester, this message came at the perfect time for our students, as they continue to navigate challenges and opportunities ahead.

An ending that reflects a powerful beginning.

The March Like Me Newsletter is now available, highlighting one of the final chapters of a program that has made a lasting impact on future educators and the communities they will serve.

As Lourdes prepares to close, this issue focuses on the strength, growth, and purpose that define the Like Me Program and its students.

Inside this month’s issue:

The February Like Me Newsletter is now available, and this issue marks a historic and meaningful chapter for our students.

This month, we share an important university update as Lourdes prepares to close after the current academic year. While this transition brings emotion and reflection, it also highlights the resilience, professionalism, and bright futures of our Like Me students.

We’re proud to spotlight Rugena and celebrate this exciting milestone in her journey as an educator!

Rugena is currently completing her student teaching experience at Hawkins STEAM Academy in a Special Education kindergarten classroom, where she is putting her passion for inclusive education into action each day.

As a Master of Education student in Special Education (K–12, Mild to Moderate | Initial Licensure) at Lourdes University and a member of the Like Me Program, Rugena exemplifies dedication, compassion, and perseverance. Her commitment to supporting young learners with diverse needs reflects the strong foundation and hands-on preparation provided through Lourdes’ education programs.

We are incredibly proud of Rugena’s hard work and growth throughout her time at Lourdes University and look forward to seeing the meaningful impact she will continue to make in the classroom.

“I always was a real teacher from the start.”

That’s how Nia Flagg, a junior Like Me student at Lourdes University and Dual Primary Education major, describes the moment she truly felt like an educator.

From being inspired by her professors and cooperating teachers, to planning and teaching her very first lesson in a special education classroom, Nia’s journey shows what hands-on preparation at Lourdes looks like. She shares how lesson planning, executing instruction, and building real connections with students helped her grow in confidence and solidified her calling to teach.

What happens when future educators are given space to engage in honest, meaningful dialogue?

At our first Like Me Monthly Meeting of Spring 2026, scholars participated in thoughtful discussions centered on representation in education and the real impact educators’ words and actions have on students.

This month’s Question of the Month invited students to reflect on why representation among educators matters and how it influences student outcomes. The conversation then expanded to a real-world scenario, prompting students to consider how educators must respond with professionalism, care, and accountability in challenging moments.

These discussions allowed scholars to explore identity, belonging, trust, and academic confidence, while strengthening their ability to lead with empathy and intention. Conversations like these are essential in preparing future educators to advocate for students and create inclusive, supportive learning environments.

Future educators in the making!

Our team had a fantastic visit with the Teaching Professions class at Whitmer High School yesterday. These students came ready with thoughtful questions about higher education, the Like Me Program, and what it truly looks like to prepare for a career in teaching.

Because this group attended our Aspiring Educators Day in October, we were able to dive deeper by exploring program pathways, our early and often field placements, how we prepare students for classroom readiness, and the personalized support we offer at Lourdes University. Students also received customized Plans of Study and information on the merit scholarships for which they would qualify based on their GPA.

We’re so proud to partner with Washington Local Schools and support the next generation of educators who will shape the future of our community.
