The Pan Am Flight 103/Lockerbie Air Disaster Archives at Syracuse University is dedicated to preserving all aspects of the event and aftermath of the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland on December 21, 1988. This site is dedicated to the 270 men, women and children whose lives were lost in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland on December 21, 1988. Included in

the collection are newspaper and magazine clippings, photographs, information on trials, government documents, books, audio and videotapes, posters, exhibit materials, and items specific to individual victims.

This month’s Pan Am 103 Archives tribute honors Mary Browell Lancaster. A resident of Sherwood Crescent in Lockerbie, Mary was in her home when it was destroyed by the wreckage of Pan Am Flight 103. Born at Moresby Hill, Whitehaven, England in 1907, Mary attended boarding school in Carlisle. After finishing school, Mary went on to Newtonrigg Agricultural College to study Poultry Management. She married John Lancaster in 1931 and they took over Jericho Farm near Whitehaven. Unusually for the time, Mary was a full, legal partner in the business. Following John’s passing, Mary moved to Lockerbie to be closer to her daughter Mollie. She is remembered by friends and family as an avid bridge player and a master of crossword puzzles and other games and skills that made use of her extensive vocabulary and love of language. She was also the steward of her family history, including over a century of letters. We remember Mary, and all the victims.

This month’s Pan Am 103 Archives tribute honors Minas Christopher Kulukundis. Head of the ship broking firm founded by his father, Minas was traveling to New York to join his family for the funeral of his uncle. Minas attended Corpus Christi College Oxford where he studied classics, ancient history, and philosophy before completing his Certified Public Accountant exams and specializing in financial management and accounting. He was a respected figure in London, known for his hard work and conscientiousness. Minas is also remembered as a devoted husband and father with a deep love of travel and appreciation for the arts, especially opera. His yearly visits to Greece were the continuation of a family tradition. We remember Minas, and all the victims.

This month’s Pan Am 103 Archives tribute honors Elke Etha Kuehne. A flight attendant on Pan Am 103, Elke had joined the airline in 1970 and been based in Miami, Washington, D.C. and New York before transferring to their London base in 1976. Prior to working for Pan Am, Elke studied languages in London and Paris, took her interpreter exams, and worked as a foreign correspondent in France. She is remembered as someone with a happy and joyful nature who was always willing to help, which earned her both recognition and friendship among her colleagues. This month’s Pan Am 103 Archives tribute honors Gregory Kosmowski. A vice president of market development for British automotive supplier Lucas Industries, Greg was returning home to Michigan to spend the holidays with his family. He held a degree in mechanical engineering from Wayne State University and had served in the U.S. Air Force. Colleagues recognized Greg as a bright and aggressive marketing expert. He was also an avid skier, golfer, and runner who had participated in Boston marathons several times. “All I can say is he was a fantastic person,” a friend shared. “Good dad, good husband, good friend.” We remember Greg, and all the victims.

This month’s Pan Am 103 Archives tribute honors Patricia Ann Klein. A lifelong resident of Trenton, New Jersey, she was returning home from visiting a sick family friend in England. Patty received both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from Trenton State College and worked for the New Jersey Department of Corrections’ Juvenile Division for thirteen years. Her final role was as director of professional services. She had also started a group home for troubled teenagers. Many of the young people she helped remembered Patty as someone who had guided them through the hardest periods of their lives. Patty is remembered by friends and loved ones as fun-loving and playful. She enjoyed music, traveling, and writing poetry. We remember Patty, and all the victims.

This month’s Pan Am 103 Archives tribute honors Jay Joseph Kingham. Senior vice president for international affairs with the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association, Jay was returning home to Potomac, Maryland from business travel in London, England and Geneva, Switzerland. He had previously served as an intelligence staff member at the U.S. Embassy in the Dominican Republic through the Defense Intelligence Agency and as a Latin American desk officer at the Pentagon. Originally from Quantico, Virginia, Jay was a 1966 graduate of George Washington University with a degree in international affairs. He is remembered for his good humor, lively wit, and his awareness of his obligations to his family and colleagues. In June 1989, Jay was honored with the Commissioners Special Citation from the Good and Drug Administration for his with the World Health Organization. We remember Jay, and all the victims.

Today marks the 37th anniversary of the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. Memorial ceremonies will be held at Hendricks Chapel at Syracuse University, in Lockerbie, Scotland, and by Victims of Pan Am Flight 103, Inc at Arlington National Cemetery. On this day, as on every day, we remember all those whose lives were lost, their families, friends, and communities.

This month’s Pan Am 103 Archives tribute honors Timothy Baron Johnson. A graduate of Neptune Senior High School in Neptune, New Jersey, Tim was returning home from a two-week visit with his girlfriend, Kesha Weedon, one of the 35 Syracuse University study abroad students killed in the bombing. Tim and Kesha met while studying civil engineering at Virginia State College before Kesha transferred to Syracuse and Tim took a semester off from school. He was planning to return to his studies in January 1989. Always active at school and in his community, Tim was a top sprinter on his high school track team, a member of the glee club, an Explorer in the Boy Scouts of America, a keen artist, a member of the Rangers in the ROTC, and a dedicated member of his church. Tim is remembered by friends and family as studious, dedicated, and always helpful. We remember Tim, and all the victims.

This month’s Pan Am 103 Archives tribute honors Mary Lincoln Johnson. A graduate of Brown University, Mary was returning home to Wayland, Massachusetts after more than a year of travel in Asia that included tutoring in Taiwan. The trip was her lifelong dream. Remembered as a caregiver with a love for people, Mary was dedicated to affirming the spirituality and humanity of others and always supported the underdog. The Mary L. Johnson Travelship to fund a Wayland teacher to travel anywhere in the world was established to honor Mary’s commitment to travel, teaching, exploring the world’s cultures, and making new friends along the way. We remember Mary, and all the victims.

In recognition of Remembrance Week here on the Syracuse University Campus, the Pan Am Flight 103/Lockerbie Air Disaster Archives has installed a small temporary exhibition showcasing a selection of photographs and artifacts from our collections about the Place of Remembrance memorial. If you’re on or near campus this week, you can stop by the exhibit case near Pages Café on the first floor of Bird Library to view the display. A schedule of other events, programs, and ceremonies for Remembrance Week can be found on the Remembrance Scholarship website at remembrance.syr.edu.
