Syracuse University Archives recently shared the standard curriculum for the very first cohort of SU students back in 1871: notice that Latin, Greek, French, German, and Hebrew are among the oldest subjects offered at Syracuse University ! Did you know: you can still take all of these subjects with us today! 🌍🍊

SU Archives writes, “Syracuse University held its very first classes this week in 1871. The Hall of Languages had not yet been constructed, so SU’s first home was downtown in the Myers Block, located at the southeast corner of Montgomery and East Genesee Streets. Along with a photo of that building, the archivists are providing images of pages from SU’s first catalog, which includes information about what kind of classes students were expected to take. If you were a student back then, you took the Classical or Scientific courses, the closest we now have to majors. Hard to believe Syracuse University was once so new to the world!”

We are so proud of Linguistic Studies major (& Russian minor) Aaron Lener '27, who was recently awarded the prestigious and competitive Beinecke Scholarship.

"As a high school senior sitting in on a historical linguistics class by Christopher Green, associate professor of linguistics in the College of Arts and Sciences, Lener heard about the Bantoid languages of West Africa.
By the time classes started that fall, he had a research proposal in hand and a seat on Green’s research team. Three years later, that early spark has grown into a body of work substantial enough to earn him a Beinecke Scholarship, one of the most competitive graduate fellowships in the country."

Last Wednesday, LLL gathered for our annual Gerlinde Ulm Sanford End of Year Celebration, where we honor graduating students and congratulate ourselves on another year of hard work! ALL NEW IN SANTIAGO: Environment, Health & Policy program 🇨🇱

Chile ranks among the region’s leaders in environmental legislation, public health reform, and urban sustainability. This new program will explore the intersection of these issues through special courses and field trips, including visits to Machu Picchu, Patagonia, Buenos Aires and more. Plus, our new spring course will focus on local health practices Latin America.

🗺️ This spring English-language program is ideal for students who have basic Spanish-language skills and are interested in exploring Latin America.

💰 All students studying in Santiago in spring 2027 will receive a $2,000 location grant automatically applied to program costs, no additional application required.
