This summer, St. Joseph's College of Nursing - Syracuse, NY welcomed ten rising seniors from the Liverpool Central School District for the Exploring Healthcare Immersion Program (EHIP), a four-week experience designed to introduce students to the many career paths available across health care.
A reimagining of the former High Tech with a Human Touch program, EHIP combines classroom learning, hands-on experiences, tours and clinical shadowing to give students a firsthand look at health care both inside and outside of direct patient care.
Throughout the program, students explored a wide range of specialties and professions across St. Joseph's Health - Syracuse, NY, including emergency medicine, nursing, pharmacy, medical imaging, respiratory therapy, infection prevention, rehabilitation, surgical services, women’s and infant services, cardiac care, case management and social work. Students also toured the Saint Marianne Cope Museum & Gift Shop and learned about careers in emergency medical services and critical care transport.
The experience culminated with professional panels, opportunities to learn from St. Joseph’s Health colleagues, and student presentations reflecting on what they learned during the program.
EHIP represents a renewed partnership between St. Joseph’s Health, St. Joseph’s College of Nursing and the Liverpool Central School District, creating opportunities for young people to experience health care careers firsthand and begin imagining where their own interests could take them. The pilot will also help inform opportunities to expand similar health care career exploration experiences to additional students and school districts in the future.
