Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend us your ears! The Italian Program at Syracuse University College of Arts and Sciences is NOT CLOSING. Thanks to this devastating headline, we have been receiving messages of both concern and support from friends & allies all over the world. Grazie infinite! However, this misinformation is also causing great harm – our program is alive & well, just in the process of restructuring within the Dept of Languages Literatures and Linguistics (LLL).
We reached out to the journalist directly, requesting key updates to the article to correct its various inaccuracies and misleading information. We also requested that "Italian" be removed from this headline, as it naturally leads readers to believe that "Italian is canceled at Syracuse." This misinformation continues to actively cause harm to our program! As of April 3, the article has been amended with more accurate information, but Italian remains in the headline.
Please – spread the word that our program is NOT closing, and students will continue to be able to major or minor in Italian at Syracuse now and in the future! 🇮🇹
Grazie infinite anche alla AATI - American Association of Teachers of Italian che ci sta aiutando tanto con le comunicazioni.
Per aspera ad astra!
ADDENDUM: cari amici, many of you are sharing this post in solidarity - grazie!!! However, because Facebook is goofy, our post doesn’t reshare, just the article che noi detestiamo! So please make sure to copy and paste our rebuttal as well! 🙏🇮🇹
In all, 93 of the 460 academic programs at the university will be closed or paused. No students were majoring in 55 of the programs that are ending.
