This month marks 65 years since Onondaga Community College opened its doors to the community 💙 To celebrate, tonight the National Grid Niagara Mohawk Building will be lit up blue and white .

In May of 1961 the Onondaga County Board of Supervisors (now the Legislature) agreed to sponsor a community college, and also in May of 1961 the SUNY Board of Trustees approved the creation of a community college for Onondaga County.

This week in OCC News, Three Journeys Reflect One Memorable OCC Experience.

The DiCocco siblings were first-generation college students, and their mother, Dee, believed deeply in the power of education. She pushed all three - Maria, Jeff, and Carly - toward the opportunity it presented. Over time, all three siblings would go from West Genesee High School to Onondaga Community College, earn degrees, and turn one family’s determination into a shared accomplishment.

On Tuesday, The National Grid Foundation today presented Onondaga Community College with $100,000 to support the National Grid Scholar Program. The generous donation will be used to strengthen the regional talent pipeline in healthcare and advanced manufacturing – two sectors critical to New York’s economic future.

The support of the National Grid Foundation will allow OCC to increase training opportunities for students pursuing careers as Certified Nursing Assistants, Home Health Aides, and Medical Assistants - fields facing urgent workforce shortages.

For one Onondaga Community College graduate, Saturday's commencement celebration came with an unforgettable surprise 🎓💍

Moments after Bellanina Viggiano received her degree in Creative Writing, she stepped off the stage and into a wedding proposal from her boyfriend of four years, Shaun Barfield.

Barfield had been planning the moment for months. “I came in this morning and asked who was in charge of the ceremony,” he said with a laugh. “I asked if I could do this, and was told, ‘Yes. Let’s do it.!”

The couple met four years ago through their church, Christian Life Assembly on Syracuse’s North Side. They plan to marry this fall.
