Syracuse University just launched a critical tool in the fight to save local news. The Local News Research Hub, developed by the Local NExT Lab at the university's Institute for Democracy, Journalism and Citizenship (IDJC) in partnership with Rebuild Local News, is a searchable database proving why local journalism matters.

“Strengthening local news reduces polarization and empowers communities,” said Margaret Talev, Kramer Director of the IDJC and professor of practice of magazine, news and digital journalism at the Newhouse School. “We are proud of Local NExT’s innovative work and our partnership with Rebuild Local News.”

Newhouse co-leads the IDJC with the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs.

ICYMI💡 A first-of-its-kind study from the Newhouse School and global research firm Ipsos has answered the question the advertising industry has been asking: Can AI replace human creativity? The short answer: No.

Adam Peruta and Carrie Riby led the Newhouse side of research that tested 20 ads across 10 major brands with 3,000 respondents.

"If the creators themselves are underwhelmed, why would we expect consumers to feel differently?" said Riby.

AI is a tool, not a replacement for human-led creativity needed to deliver a competitive advantage. Read more:

Market research firm Ipsos collaborated with Newhouse faculty on study that finds AI-generated ads are “good enough” but fall short of the human creativity needed to drive business results.

Donald Newhouse and the Newhouse family’s philanthropy changed the face of Syracuse University and created the Newhouse School, setting the course for generations of communications students. Through the Samuel I. Newhouse Foundation, his family became the University's largest benefactor, supporting the construction of the Newhouse complex, student scholarships and much more. In 2020, a $75 million pledge from the foundation marked the largest-ever gift in University history.

“The Newhouse School resulted from my father’s dream to establish the finest journalism school in the world,” he said when he announced the gift in January of that year. “In this era in which public communications is undergoing continual and radical change, my family and I expect to continue our long-term commitment to ensure that the school my dad helped found almost 60 years ago remains the leading communications school in the world for another generation.”
