Professor Denisa Jashari, our History Department’s assistant professor in Latin American History, recently gave her public lecture, “Democracy in Chile,” at our local Liverpool Public Library’s “The Warm Mug Historians” series! Her May talk explored how Salvador Allende’s democratically elected government in Chile became entangled in Cold War tensions, culminating in a CIA-backed coup in 1973. It also discussed the seventeen year long civil-military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. The talk highlighted the vibrant domestic resistance, international pressures, and 1988 plebiscite that led to Chile’s transition back to democratic governance.
