One degree closer to their dreams. ๐ŸŽ“

On this campus, we're big fans of our first-generation Tacoma Huskies โ€” the change makers, go-getters and visionary students first in their families to earn a college degree.

When they make up more than half of our student body, the only option is to hype them up like there's no tomorrow. And last week, we did exactly that. ๐ŸŽŠ

Together, we celebrated the Class of 2026 in style, honoring the accomplishments of our first-gen graduates with a stole to represent every hurdle, every all nighter and every new experience to navigate without a roadmap.

Between loved ones, family members, advocates and support systems of every kind, it was a packed house for our first-generation grads, and we couldn't be prouder of all they've achieved. ๐Ÿ’œ

Great to spend time with University of Washington Tacoma Sports Enterprise Management students at the Tacoma Rainiers game. โšพ๐Ÿ’œ

As a founding advisory board member for the program, itโ€™s always meaningful to connect with students and hear their ideas during conversations like this. These kinds of experiences โ€” learning, connecting, and building relationships outside the classroom โ€” matter.

This is what strong higher education and workforce pathways look like, and itโ€™s work Iโ€™ll continue to support in Olympia.

Through a longtime community partnership, Kent Laboratory Academy (KLA) and UW Tacoma's School of Education have collaborated to advance equity, innovation and excellence in PK-12 education. ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’›

Each year, KLA hosts Tacoma Huskies who are studying to become certified classroom teachers, administrators and school psychologists.

KLA leadership and staff mentor UW Tacoma students to develop the disposition, knowledge and skills required to become transformative educators (with transformative results).

With this partnership at the heart of a small public school setting, KLA provides a personalized learning environment focused on the whole child for students third grade through high school. ๐Ÿซ๐ŸšŒ

Cut to today, and more than 20 percent of KLAโ€™s staff have been trained through UW Tacoma, says Principal Stephanie Knipp, Ed.D., who also serves as a clinical experience coordinator for the School of Education.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’› It's our honor to support a large military-connected community at UW Tacoma that includes veterans, active-duty service members, spouses and children of military personnel, and Gold Star families whose loved ones died while serving in active conflicts.

On Memorial Day, we pause to honor and thank our military service members who lost their lives in the line of duty.

If you're on campus, you'll see American flags tracing the Prairie Line Trail. These flags were planted on Friday morning by UW Tacomaโ€™s Veteran and Military Resource Center (VMRC) and our military community members, commemorating the sacrifices made in service of our country by generations of South Sound personnel.

You've seen the campus master plan take shape...now what? ๐Ÿ‘€

Several aspects are already underway:

One of the most significant and anticipated changes is a new residence hall that will add 500 new beds to campus, along with UW Tacomaโ€™s first-ever dining hall โ€” amenities that will transform the university into a more residential 24/7 environment.

Other projects on the horizon include renovations to two existing campus facilities: the Tioga Library Building and the Swiss Hall, a Tacoma icon that will be transformed into a hub for student programming and a new campus welcome center. ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ญ

We've charted a course for the next 35 years, Tacoma Huskies.

Watch this space. Exciting times ahead! And we couldn't do it without you. ๐Ÿ’œ

The ultimate architects for the future of our campus are already here. ๐Ÿ’œ

Who better to consult on our next chapter than the students who call UW Tacoma home?

The new campus master plan charts a course for our next 35 years downtown, and it wouldn't have been possible without insights from Tacoma Huskies studying civil engineering and urban design.

For these students, the master plan became another opportunity to make Grit City our classroom, giving them the chance to shape a place they move through every day as "expert users."

While civil engineering students explored technical solutions and learned about the social aspects of creating projects for communities, the urban design students led a campus-wide engagement campaign to gather feedback from their peers on what they'd like to see included in the master plan.

See what they came up with in part four of our series on the next era of UW Tacoma: tacoma.uw.edu/news/uw-tacoma-campus-master-plan-multidisciplinary-approach-to-campus-planning

AI offers an avenue for scientists and scholars to hit the fast forward button when it comes to their research, expediting breakthroughs and fast-tracking potential solutions โ€” all the better for studying rare diseases, where every second counts.

In collaboration with students, postdoctoral researchers and Sage Bionetworks, UW Tacoma professor Martine De C**k is pioneering privacy-preserving AI in healthcare settings, developing tools that allow scholars to analyze sensitive medical data for discovery while protecting patient privacy.

A key area of this work involves synthetic data โ€” realistic, computer-generated patient data that can be shared safely for research purposes.

With early support from UW Tacomaโ€™s Founders Endowment Award and continued funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF), De C**k aims to accelerate healthcare innovation through secure data sharing while providing student researchers with hands-on experience using AI tools for the greater good. ๐Ÿ’œ

โœ”๏ธ Serving their communities.
โœ”๏ธ Advocating for their peers.
โœ”๏ธ Solving problems with lasting solutions.

Besides being Tacoma Huskies, there's a lot that Michael Allosada and Raven Tyler have in common.

It's what makes them both exemplary recipients of the Student Civic Leadership Award, honoring college students across Washington state who demonstrate outstanding leadership in civic engagement and social entrepreneurship (another thing they have in common).

Both students were recognized at an awards ceremony in April, hosted by the Washington Campus Coalition for the Public Good.

โ€œMichael and Raven are making a far-reaching, highly visible impact in the community โ€” on our campus, across our region and state and even nationally,โ€ said UW Tacoma Chancellor Sheila Edwards Lange. โ€œThey each represent what it means to be a Tacoma Husky, and we are proud to celebrate their commitment to service through the Student Civic Leadership Awards."
