In light of PLU's decision to move to distance learning through to the end of March, the School of Arts and Communication has made the difficult decision to cancel all events and performances now through March 29. This unfortunately includes the USU Western Regional Championships. Refunds will be issued for those who have already made purchases.

Congratulations to Summer Ash and Alex Williams for winnings the historic Hatfields tournament! Summer also took home 4th speaker!

We were very successful at Seattle IV this weekend! Summer Ash and Alex Williams broke to quarterfinals and Bryna Frohock and Logan Albert made it to semifinals. Chloe Hodgson took 4th novice speaker and Skye Cordero took second novice speaker. Logan Albert took 7th speaker in the open division. We are so proud of our team for doing so well and providing such compelling arguments at such a competitive tournament.

It was an amazing weekend for PLU Debate at the Mahaffey Invitational! Summer Ash and Alex Williams were the top seed going into elimination rounds and ended as semifinalists and Jessica Ullom-Minnich and Skye Cordero won the tournament after an amazing performance in finals! Lutes also took the top three speaker awards with Summer Ash first🥇, Alex second🥈and Jessica third🥉

PLU Debate killed it at Lewis & Clark’s Steve Hunt Classic this weekend! We broke three of our open teams to outrounds with one of them advancing to semifinals, while our novice team broke to junior finals. Chloe Hodgson ranked 9th for novice speakers and seven of our debaters were in the top twenty speakers in the open division. Logan Albert took 17th place, Jessica Ullom-Minnich took 12th place, Hannah Backus took 11th place, Emma Dicken took 9th place, Bryna Frohock took 8th place, Alex Williams took 3rd place, and Summer Ash took 2nd place. PLU took 2nd place for overall sweepstakes.

We’re at Lewis & Clark College this weekend for the Steve Hunt Classic. Our novice team broke to novice finals and three of our open teams broke to open outrounds! Bringing rent control to Tacoma will be the topic of a debate at Pacific Lutheran University. The PLU event will feature 2nd District Rep. Andrew Barkis and Dinah Braccio from the Tenants Union of Washington.

The 2019 Ruth Anderson Public Debate is right around the corner! Our featured PLU debaters, guest debaters, and program team have been hard at work preparing to answer the debate’s resolution: Tacoma should introduce a policy of rent control.

Summer and Hannah are the two student debaters who will be debating alongside our guests at the 2019 Ruth Anderson Public Debate. Summer and Hannah bring a combined 10 years of argumentation experience, 10 breaks to outrounds at collegiate tournaments, and 22 speaker awards to the debate. This event offers a unique opportunity where our students’ expertise can shine light on the implications of an issue that affects communities all over the world, and is keenly felt in our backyard. This debate is a unique opportunity where expertise in the area of rent control will converge with our students' expertise in argumentation and provide an engaging and nuanced conversation surrounding the issue of rent control.

The Ruth Anderson Public Debate will be Tuesday, October 1st at 7 p.m. in the Regency Room of the Anderson University Center at Pacific Lutheran University.
