UW Tacoma Center for Service and Leadership - CSL

UW Tacoma Center for Service and Leadership - CSL The CSL provides students with opportunities to get involved in the community and grow as leaders. T Three of these events are held per quarter.

Volunteer Services offers three types of events, One Time Events, Volunteer Off-Campus Events, and Spring Breakaway Trips. One Time Events: Where volunteer opportunities are brought to students on-campus! UWT Volunteer Off-Campus Events (VOE): Where students, staff and faculty are invited to participate in a service project off-campus. These events are planned for once a month. Alternative Spring

"Breakaway" Trip: Want to try something a little different? Forego your ordinary plans to vacation and join us for a trip that focuses on volunteering and giving back to the community. Two breakaway trips are offered through UW Tacoma.

No freebies here, you gotta log your volunteer hours! You can find our program volunteer hour log in the link in our bio!

“Why should I log my volunteer hours?” You should log your service hours through our program because we can keep track of it and reward you for reaching certain milestones!
- Pouch: 75 hours
- Water bottle: 150 hours
- Crossbody bag: 200 hours
- Backpack: 250 hours
- Leadership Award: 300 hours (200 for transfers/graduates)

“What if I like to volunteer for the love of the game? No reward required.” Logging your volunteer hours also helps our program with data on when and where our students are volunteering most. That way we can see what events might be successful in creating the most civic engagement.

“What counts as volunteer hours?” Any work that is unpaid, during your time as a UWT student, and benefits the greater good of the community and society.

Our next April Student Spotlight is Isaac Luce! Read his story below:

“Isaac Luce, it’s my 1st year, I’m registered for Electrical Engineering next Autumn. I love to compose, arrange, and perform music.

Volunteer to me means helping others to accomplish a goal that may not directly benefit you. In other words, no pay, no benefits, “just for the love of the game” .

I volunteered the most at the high school I graduated from, where I mentored a young but quickly growing FIRST robotics team. While there I generally gave advice on wiring and general mechanical ideas.”

It’s time to show off our amazing and hard-working students of April! Meet Trezdin and read his story:

“Trezdin Kade Martinez, Sophmore (by credits) First year (by enrollment date), Pre-engineering, I am the son of immigrants and working to become a dual citizen in the Philippines

Volunteering is trying to pay back your community by helping to make it better. Contributing your efforts to help others get the same opportunities is the bedrock of society, the drive to help make changes so others can have better lives and in turn your life gets better. The goal is not to make your service about self but to realize that by consequence you have made yourself better.

I volunteer at my high school robotics and media clubs. My high school is very underprivileged and the district refuses to invest into it until they gain the funding to rebuild it. That means programs like robotics don’t get nearly enough resources to help support the students who are trying to learn these skills and join these close knit communities. I have the knowledge and the experience to teach these so I like to volunteer to help teach them things that would be used in their careers. In robotics they gain trade skills from designing to building to business that prepares them for the future. And when people like that need help, and I am able to support them, I will gladly give them my time to help them succeed. And through that I learn how to lead and what goes into fostering safe places for people.”

Did you think we forgot? It’s time for our student spotlight! This month we’re recognizing Sylvia Smith for all of her hard work in March. Read her story below:

“My name is Sylvia Smith, a third year bachelors of social welfare student. My favorite hobby is reading.
I enjoy volunteering because it allows me to be directly involved in helping others, which I deem to be the most important way to build community bonds.

The place I volunteer at the most is a crisis line, where I help people to either solve the immediate problem they’re dealing with, or I help them keep going for another day.”

Keep up the great work and keep logging your hours!
