In an exciting update from the Race and Pedagogy Institute, we figured that Black History Month and it's impact on the community should go far past February, so student staff in the shared offices of African American Studies and Race and Pedagogy Institute worked to create this! For our local friends, there is now a directory developed for students by students to provide exposure to Black owned businesses in the Tacoma area.

As something always in development, we are actively editing and adding businesses, so be sure to send us a shout out if we haven't added a favorite of yours. You can check the link in our bio to go to the Race and Pedagogy Institute website, which will have a direct link under "Content Highlights".

Tacoma Black Owned Business Directory
Established Fall 2025
Created by the offices of Race and Pedagogy Institute in partnership with African American Studies, including students Skya Favor '26, Olivia Kent-Horton '27, and Madi Potter-Moen '26.

Join us for a special screening of Concussion at The Grand Cinema at 2:30 pm Tomorrow, Sunday, February 23 with a post-film discussion led by Dr. LaToya Brackett, Associate Professor in African American Studies and a member of the Race & Pedagogy Institute’s leadership team at the University of Puget Sound.

Stick around after the film & join Dr. Brackett in a discussion around the history and connection of racism & CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy) in the NFL, centering the Black American relationship with the NFL & the lawsuit about "race-norming" in CTE compensation from 2021. Finally, we'll tie it all into this most recent Super Bowl, with its major Black presence & message.
