🌸 Yes, those are Hollyhocks blooming in the Butterfly Garden between the Dunlap Success Center and the Globe!

While hollyhocks are typically grown as biennials in northern states, Florida’s hot and humid summers mean they grow best here as annuals. By planting seeds in the fall, these colorful blooms can thrive through winter and put on a show by spring. ☀️

Hollyhocks love full sun, well-draining soil, and deep watering — and right now, they’re stealing the spotlight in the garden! 🌿

Stokes’ aster (Stokesia laevis) is currently in bloom in the National Pan-Hellenic Council Park near Moore Auditorium and the FSU Student Union along Legacy Walk💜

This native evergreen perennial is a beautiful, low-maintenance addition to the landscape, growing 10–24 inches tall and thriving in partial sun with well-drained, acidic soil. Its nectar-rich blooms are a favorite for pollinators like bees and butterflies 🐝🦋

Across FSU’s campus, a closer look at the plaques at the base of certain trees reveals a living link to history🌳

In 2010, Florida State University Grounds and Landscaping inducted eight Southern Live Oaks into the Leon County Government Patriarch Oak Program, recognizing trees with a diameter at breast height of at least 72 inches—an indicator they are likely over 160 years old. That means these oaks predate the founding of the West Florida Seminary, the institution from which Florida State University would eventually grow.

These patriarch trees have stood through generations of change, offering shade, strength, and continuity since the earliest days of the West Florida Seminary. Today, they remain a powerful reminder of the deep roots of campus history and the landscapes that shaped it🌿

Behind the scenes, Facilities helps keep these spaces safe, clean, and running smoothly every day. At Ragans Hall, Facilities Supervisor John Gregory has made a strong impact in his first year, helping build community through his leadership and care.

This spring, Gregory received a University Housing Garnet & Gold Award for his outstanding service and dedication to student life, crediting his success to his hardworking Ragans Hall team.
