Boost the buzz around your garden! 🐝🌼

Pollinator Week (June 22-28, 2026) celebrates the incredible animals that move pollen from flower to flower, a process that drives plant reproduction. Bees, birds, butterflies, and other pollinators play a vital role in keeping our green environments and food systems thriving. To celebrate them, we are hosting a wildflower seed giveaway to help you plant for the pollinators!

How it works:
✅ Register and select up to 4 wildflower seed types.
✅ Receive your seeds in the mail between June 19 and 26.
✅ Plant, water, watch them grow, and welcome the pollinators! 🌱✨

Restrictions apply: For City of West Palm Beach residents and businesses only.

Make your home a haven for pollinators.

Registration closes June 15, 2026.

This past Saturday, FAMU Extension- West Palm Beach proudly participated as an exhibitor at the Urban League of Palm Beach County’s Fastest Kid in Palm Beach County event. We were thrilled to be part of such an exciting and impactful experience, as it aligns closely with one of Extension’s core values—promoting physical activity from an early age.

Participants ranged from Kindergarten through eighth grade, with winners selected from each grade level. Each winner received award ribbons, and the top two racers earned laptops in recognition of their outstanding performances.

Beyond the competition, this event provided a meaningful opportunity to build pride, confidence, and a sense of accomplishment among youth in our community. We are incredibly proud of all the participants who came out to race and showcase their talents.

We look forward to continuing our involvement and supporting this inspiring event again next year!

Take the Compost Challenge
Let’s make a difference, Palm Beach County!
Processing your waste at home helps reduce the environmental impact of transporting yard waste to the landfill.
It extends the life of the existing landfills and delays the need to create new landfills.
It creates a useful soil amendment that really makes your garden and landscape grow.

Compost Challenge: Start Small, Make a Big Impact!
Ready to reduce waste and give back to the earth?
Challenge yourself to keep food waste out of the trash for one full week; you might be surprised how much you can save from the landfill!
• Set up a backyard compost bin
• Use a compost tumbler for easy turning
• Try indoor composting if you have limited space e.g.

Vermicomposting

Browns vs. Greens

A healthy compost pile needs: 🍂 + 🍏 = The perfect mix!
"GREEN" materials, which are rich in nitrogen, and "BROWN" materials, which are rich in carbon.

A ratio of three (3) parts BROWN materials to one (1) part GREEN material is a great mix.
NB. The manure of animals that eat plants (cows, horses, etc.) is a great "green" material for a compost pile.

The waste of carnivorous animals (dogs, cats, etc.) should also not be used due to the possibility of diseases.

Palm Beach County homes generate plenty of both, making composting an easy win for reducing waste.

What Can You Compost?
Composting is simple!

You CAN compost:
• Fruit & vegetable scraps
• Coffee grounds & filters
• Eggshells
• Leaves & grass clippings

With yard waste already making up a large share of local waste, composting these materials can significantly reduce what goes to the curb.

Food Waste in Palm Beach County
Did you know? Food waste makes up a significant portion of the waste stream in Palm Beach County. Yard waste alone makes up over 40% of household waste, showing just how much could be composted instead of discarded.
That means tons of valuable organic material are being lost instead of reused.

Why Composting Matters
When food waste goes to the landfill, it doesn’t break down properly; it produces methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.

By composting at home, Palm Beach County residents can:
Reduce landfill waste
Lower greenhouse gas emissions
Improves soil health
Helps retain moisture
Reduces the need for chemical fertilizers
Supports beneficial organisms
Saves money

Small actions at home can make a big local impact.

Happy International Compost Awareness Week! 🌍

We’re excited to spend this week celebrating compost and all the ways we can nourish the soil that feeds us.
Did you know that composting is one of the easiest ways to reduce waste and help the planet?

What is composting?
Composting is the natural process of breaking down organic materials, like food scraps, yard waste, and paper into a nutrient-rich substance called compost. This happens with the help of microorganisms (like bacteria and fungi), along with oxygen, moisture, and time.

The end product, compost, looks like dark, crumbly soil and can be used to improve garden soil, help plants grow, and reduce the need for chemical fertilizers.

Let’s work together to create healthier soil, cleaner communities, and a greener future.
