Save the date! Our upcoming seminar, titled "What Can Literature Do When It Can Do Nothing?," will explore writing's role in cultural and social change.

Patrick Chamoiseau, our special invited guest, is an award-winning multidisciplinary artist from Martinique. The seminar will also feature speakers Patrick Crowley (University of Galway), Charles Forsdick (University of Cambridge), Maeve McCusker (Queen's University Belfast), and Martin Munro (FSU Department of Modern Languages & Linguistics).

It's official! 🎉 Florida State University has launched the FSU Humanities Center within the FSU College of Arts & Sciences, establishing an interdisciplinary hub to advance humanities research and expand the field’s visibility across the university and beyond.

“The Humanities Center reflects the legacy of FSU’s commitment to the advancement of the humanities,” said FSU President Richard McCullough. “We are creating new opportunities for faculty, students, staff and the community to collaborate, pursue important research and further strengthen the humanities at FSU.”

FSU Humanities Center announces the inaugural class of dissertation fellows:
Joachim F. Adams (top left) is a doctoral candidate in French working with associate professor of French Michelle Bumatay in the FSU Department of Modern Languages & Linguistics. His dissertation, “Queering Africanity: Affective Realism and Passive Intolerance in Francophone Sub-Saharan African Literature,” focuses on LGBTQ+ representation in Francophone African literature.

“Even when we think we’re doing a grammar check, [AI] models shift the meaning of what we write," said Thomas Juzek, assistant professor of computational linguistics in the FSU Department of Modern Languages & Linguistics.

Education Week recently quoted Juzek in an article exploring how some classrooms are using AI to help children learn to read.
