Save Gibbs Cottage

Save Gibbs Cottage To save, protect, preserve and restore Gibbs Cottage, the home of Florida A&M University founder Thomas Van Renssalaer Gibbs Gibbs Hall is named for Gibbs.

Gibbs Cottage, built in 1892, was the home of Reconstruction-era FL State Representative Thomas Van Renssalaer Gibbs, who introduced the legislation to found present-day Florida A&M University, then the State Normal College for Colored Students. Gibbs built the cottage for his family, included his wife, Alice Menard Gibbs, and their 11 children. The home also belonged to famed FAMU Math Professor

Everett Booker Jones, for whom Jones Hall is named. His home was moved to its present site, tucked away next to the University Club House in 1990 and underwent an exterior renovation. It had been moved twice before to avoid demolition. The home has sat vacant for 22 years and is deteriorated. It is now time to take action to save history while we still are able!
