FSU School Psychology Florida State University School Psychology MS/EdS Program Successful graduates of the program received specialist/master’s degrees (Ed.S./M.S.)

The School Psychology Program at Florida State University is a 73-hour program that includes two years of academic course work and practica, with a third year of internship. in Counseling and Human Systems with a major in School Psychology. This degree meets entry-level educational requirements of Florida for the practice of school psychology. The School Psychology program is grounded in the pract

itioner-scholar model, meaning that it prepares professional school psychologists with excellent applied skills who also understand and apply research in the theory and practice of school psychology. The philosophy of the program is learner-centered; the culminating effort is to prepare school psychology practitioners who possess the knowledge and skills necessary to promote the educational and psychological well-being of children and youth and to address the increasingly diverse needs they will ultimately serve. The training program recognizes that children and adolescents currently face a myriad of critical issues, including poverty, violence, bullying and harassment, teen pregnancy/sexual behavior, alcohol and drug abuse, increased cultural and linguistic diversity, and mental health problems. The School Psychology Program emphasizes that school psychologists can and should play an important role in addressing the critical issues confronting children and adolescents in the 21st century. The training program embraces the idea that the roles of school psychologists must be expanded and revised in order to successfully promote the educational and psychological well-being of all children and adolescents in the face of current challenges.

Our intern spotlight this week is Travis Coleman! Travis is completing his internship in Walton County, FL.

Here is what he had to say about his experience so far:

What do you like most about internship?
"The chance to build connections with the people at my schools has been a great experience. I've gotten the chance to work with different teams acrost three schools, each providing experience with different age groups and sets of problems. The knowledge I've gained from working with everyone, from teachers to school counselors to my own supervisors, has been invaluable as I've continued through internship."

How did the FSU M.S./Ed.S. School Psychology program prepare you for internship?
"The practicum experience available at FSU had me prepared to jump right into a school environment. Getting experience at FSUS as well as the multidisciplinary center helped me gain skills that would directly translate to the school environment. I also believe the chance to work with so many other people and students within the program prepared me for the amount of teamwork that happens in the schools."

What advice do you have for current students?
"Don't be afraid to ask questions and work in situations that make you uncomfortable. I've had amazing support throughout my internship, but my supervisor also hasn't been scared to throw me into the deep end (with her a phone call away for that support haha). Even though it has been hard at times, I also think that it has been incredibly rewarding as well."

Thank you, Travis, for your hard work!

Our intern spotlight this week is Carley Still! Carley is completing her internship in Gainesville, Florida. Here is what she had to say about her experience so far:

What do you like most about internship?
"So far, my favorite part about internship is being able to be in the school every day and getting to get to know and work with different kiddos! I have also loved being able to be hands on in the mental health aspect of school psychology. I have already learned so much and am looking forward to the rest of the year!"

How did the FSU M.S./Ed.S. School Psychology program prepare you for internship?
"The FSU M.S./Ed.S. school psychology program allowed me to get a lot of practicum experience that I have been able to apply to directly apply internship even early in the school year. I have been able to confidently go into internship feeling ready for various types of academic, behavioral, or social/emotional cases."

What advice do you have for current students?
"I would tell current students to be engaged in practicum and get all the experiences you are able to. Enjoy the last year when you and your cohort are all together and keep in touch over internship."

Thank you, Carley, for your hard work!
