to First Amendment Week 2026! ๐Ÿ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ’š A full week of panels, keynotes, and roundtables brought together faculty, students, and media professionals for powerful conversations on press freedom, reporting ethics, and the evolving challenges facing todayโ€™s journalists.

We heard from First Amendment Foundation Executive Director Bobby Block, legal associate Grace Nwekesi, and Emmy Award-winning journalist Georgia Fort, and left with a deeper understanding of what it means to protect and practice a free press. ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ

Faculty Roundup ๐ŸŽ“| Professor Anosh Gill took SJGCโ€™s expertise to the global stage this spring, serving as a leading voice at the Southeast Conference on Education and the inaugural Southeast Asian Conference on Arts and Humanities in Singapore. ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ

With 30+ years of global advertising experience, 100+ design awards, and Fulbright Scholar recognition, Prof. Gill brought his signature expertise in typography, branding, and visual communication to a room of 341 delegates from 51 countries.

Alongside SJGC alumna Kia Dolby, now a professor at SCAD, he co-presented โ€œIntegrating Diverse Language Scripts Through a Unified Typographic Framework for Global Branding,โ€ a framework exploring language, design, and cross-cultural connection in a multilingual world. ๐ŸŒโœ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿ | Big congratulations to our amazing student Janelle Sears on being selected for the Carnegie-Knight News21 initiative! ๐ŸŽ‰

Carnegie-Knight News21 is a prestigious national reporting initiative that brings together the best journalism students from across the country to produce in-depth, multimedia investigations for major outlets like The Washington Post, NBC News and USA Today. ๐Ÿ“ฐ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ

Janelle is heading to Arizona State Universityโ€™s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication this summer to do exactly that, and we couldnโ€™t be more proud! ๐Ÿ†

This is one of the most competitive programs in the country, and a Rattler earned her spot. Thatโ€™s what SJGC is built for! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿพ

Weโ€™re cheering for you every step of the way, Janelle! Go show them what a Rattler can do! ๐Ÿ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿ | Not one, but TWO Rattlers named to the 2026-27 HBCU Science Journalism Fellowship by the Knight Science Journalism at MIT! ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ”ฌ

Junior journalism students Khalil-Lullah Ballentine and Krysten Hood are heading to Cambridge for a weeklong science journalism summer camp at MIT, where theyโ€™ll train alongside some of the top journalists and publications in the industry. After camp, both will be paired with professional science journalists for 10 months of mentorship as they develop, pitch, and publish real stories on science, health, and environmental issues. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ

This is the third year of the program and FAMU SJGC keeps showing up. Jonathan R.M. Charles repped the inaugural 2024 cohort and went on to publish internationally with CBS News. Skylar Rowley carried the torch in 2025. Now Khalil and Krysten are next. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ

๐Ÿ | Congratulations to our amazing student Roni Graham on her selection for the Report for America internship program! ๐ŸŽ‰

Roni will join WFSU Public Media Radio in Tallahassee for a 10-week, paid internship where sheโ€™ll produce multi-source stories, receive editorial mentorship, and grow her skills in a professional newsroom setting. ๐Ÿ“ป

She arrives with impressive experience already under her belt, as a live shot reporter for FAMU-TV 20, technical director for Word Around Campus, and correspondent for The Sanford Herald.

Since 2025, Report for America has placed more than 800 emerging journalists in local newsrooms nationwide, with a commitment to diverse, community-centered coverage. This yearโ€™s cohort includes students from HBCUs, HSIs, and journalism programs across the country. ๐ŸŒ

โ€œThis selection holds a lot of value for me,โ€ Roni shared. โ€œReport for Americaโ€™s intentional focus on under-covered issues aligns with my values as a journalist, so itโ€™s the perfect fit.โ€

We couldnโ€™t be prouder. Go show them what a Rattler can do, Roni! ๐Ÿ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ’š

Faculty RoundUP ๐ŸŽ“| Dean Mira Lowe has a new opinion editorial out on building ethical, AI-ready journalists for todayโ€™s evolving media landscape. A must-read for emerging media professionals! ๐Ÿ“ฐ๐Ÿ

Her approach keeps fundamentals at the core, making sure students lead with verification, research and solid reporting. AI is treated as a tool, not a crutch, with transparency and human judgment guiding every decision.

This fall, our faculty gathered for โ€œAI in Action: Leveraging Technology in Teaching, Research & Workflowโ€ to explore how to bring responsible AI practices into the classroom. Informed faculty means better-prepared students. ๐Ÿ’ก

Technological advancements should not be something our students fear. We are committed to helping them stay eager, curious and confident as they step into an ever-changing media world. Our job is to make sure the tools we embrace build trust, not tarnish it. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿพ
