Proud to have such a strong USF EM presence at this past week! Presentations by Dr. Henderson, Dr. Wilson, Dr. Okonkwo, Dr. Kiel (who learned Monday night at 9 PM that he’d be lecturing the very next day!), Dr. Premer, Dr. Patel, and Dr. Weinstein highlighted our program’s commitment to research, innovation, and academic emergency medicine.

Alongside our presenters, USF co-authors and EM team members had a blast at the conference — including bringing home a SonoGames award! Thank you to everyone who represented USF EM so well💚

Check out Dr. Heather Henderson’s publication in this month’s issue of SAEM Pulse! “From Crisis to Connection: Substance Use, Psychosis, and the Emergency Department” was co-authored with Kyra Benowitz on behalf of the SAEM Social Emergency Medicine and Population Health Interest Group. The article explores a practical framework to differentiate between primary and substance-induced psychosis, in addition to evidence based harm reduction and care coordination strategies. In the emergency department, teamwork saves lives, and physicians could not do this work without the skill, compassion, advocacy, and dedication of our nursing colleagues. Thank you for your resilience, expertise, and the countless ways you support patients, families, and our entire healthcare team every single day.

We are grateful to work alongside you. Happy Nurse’s Week!💚🩺

Meet Dr. Nikhil Patel, MD, PGY-1! Dr. Patel attended the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.. but is still loyal to his undergraduate Gators🐊 His JBL speaker is essential for keeping morale high, as he runs solely on vibes and chocolate chip cookies🍪 Before shifts, you’ll catch him listening to “Where You Are” by Zedd (Remix by John Summit) If not for medical school, Dr. Patel would be in healthcare administration!

Why USF? 💚 “Being from Tampa, it was great to come back home! My wife and I were so excited to couples match at our #1 choices. What really drew me in was the people—diverse backgrounds, strong mentorship, and a ton of opportunities! On top of that, the training at the General is second to none and prepares you for pretty much anything you’ll face in your career.”

Congratulations to Ashley Bader (right), our Director of Research, for her poster presentation at the Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP) 2026 Conference in Orlando, titled “Practice Makes Ethical: Consent Simulation for Training and Compliance Excellence.” This work highlighted a simulation‑based training model designed to strengthen informed consent practices, support regulatory compliance, and increase research staff confidence through structured observation, feedback, and supervised real‑world application.

The poster was coauthored with Kim Smith (left) and Zoe Morris (not pictured) both TGH Joint Office of Clinical Research Clinical Research Educators. We are proud to share that the poster was awarded 3rd Place in the conference poster competition—a recognition of our team’s commitment to research education and the ethical conduct of research and consent practices.
