Water hyacinth has a been a problem for navigation and ecology in Florida since the late 19th century. Harvesting and using it would be a better option than killing it with herbicides.

Invasive plant species cost the global economy billions of dollars. One of the worst cases may have finally met its match.

Many coastal communities are embracing living shorelines as a cost effective method of protecting against erosion caused by storms, boat wakes, and normal tidal action. Living shorelines have the added benefit of providing increased habitat for coastal wildlife, both aquatic and terrestrial, as compared with "hardened" shorelines like seawalls.

As the Tampa Bay region slowly but surely rebuilds infrastructure ranging from beaches to the baseball stadium, one bright spot stands out. Living shorelines, even in locations with the highest wave energy, generally came through all three 2024 hurricanes with minimal damage. “We were surprised at...

"Pumping groundwater appears to have a greater consequence than ever previously thought. But now—thanks to a study published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters—we can see that, in less than two decades, Earth has tilted 31.5 inches as a result of pumping groundwater. This equates to .24 inches of sea level rise."

Can we fix it back?

The Pinellas County Health Department tested the water at its beaches and all samples showed that bacteria levels are low and the water is safe. However, work is continuing to restore dunes and remove hurricane debris, so people are encouraged to stay off the beach for the time being, to give public works an opportunity to finish the job.
